11 Big New Features for Apple News on Your iPhone with iOS 17.5
Jun 03, 2025 am 09:33 AMThe app with the most substantial update in iOS 17.5 is undoubtedly Apple News. Although there are a few adjustments in Books and Settings, along with minor tweaks in apps like Podcasts, Apple News boasts at least 11 new features and modifications you should be aware of, some of which are truly exciting.
Quadrant Word Game
If you're subscribed to Apple News , you can now enjoy Quadrant in the Puzzles section, alongside Crossword and Crossword Mini. Quadrant is a fresh word game where you receive 20 tiles, each featuring two to four letters, and aim to form words using one to four tiles.
Forming a word with four tiles is referred to as a Quadrant, and each puzzle contains five Quadrants. Each Quadrant is worth 8 points, but achieving all five earns you a 40-point bonus. Smaller words still earn points, though not as many. Your objective is to secure the Top Rank in each puzzle, scoring 100 or more points.

Game Center Leaderboards
News puzzles, including the new Quadrant daily plays, are now integrated with Game Center. You can access leaderboards for all three puzzle types to compare your Daily Score or Daily Solve Time against your Game Center friends and global players. Leaderboards are accessible through a new icon on the main puzzles screen and each puzzle type's section, resembling a star atop a ranking list. You can view the stats for the current day's games or review the previous day's figures.

Game Center Toggle Switch
The Apple News preferences include a switch to disable Game Center if you're not interested in leaderboards or Game Center in general. Navigate to Settings ? News, then toggle off the "Game Center" switch under News Puzzles. With it off, News will stop sending your results to Game Center to compare your rankings with friends and other solvers.
News Offline Mode
Previously, you could automatically download magazines and audio stories prior to iOS 17.5 to read or listen to offline. However, it wasn't always evident if you were engaging with News downloaded content. In iOS 17.5, it's unmistakably clear on the Today tab, where "News Offline Mode" is prominently displayed in bold letters at the top of the page. This is just one indicator of being offline (see the next feature below).
News Offline Mode Status Indicators
To complement the updated News Offline Mode, Apple News now provides a status bar at the top to notify you of specific connection issues, such as when there's no internet or a weak connection. Here's what you might encounter:
- No Internet Connection: Show Stories Downloaded for Offline Mode
- No Internet Connection: Last Updated [TIME or DAY/TIME]
- Poor Connection Detected: Last Updated [TIME or DAY/TIME]
- Internet Connection Detected: Check for New Stories
- Offline Mode Unavailable
The "Show Stories Downloaded for Offline Mode" and "Check for New Stories" are both clickable links to perform the associated actions. If you don't subscribe to News , you may see:
- Apple News isn't connected to the Internet. Offline Mode requires a News subscription.
Enhanced News Offline Mode Alerts
Prior to iOS 17.5, if you attempted to view content downloaded with your News subscription, you'd see the same alert as non-subscribers:
- Story Unavailable: Apple News isn't connected to the Internet. {OK} {Go to Settings}
- Issue Unavailable: Apple News isn't connected to the Internet. {OK} {Go to Settings}
- Puzzle Unavailable: Apple News isn't connected to the Internet. {OK} {Go to Settings}
Non-subscribers may still encounter the "Story Unavailable" notification above. However, if you're a paying subscriber, you'll likely see these messages instead:
- Story Unavailable: This story couldn't be downloaded for Offline Mode. {OK}
- Issue Unavailable: This issue couldn't be downloaded for Offline Mode. {OK}
- Puzzle Unavailable: This puzzle couldn't be downloaded for Offline Mode. {OK}
Customizable News Offline Mode Downloads
To refine your News Offline Mode experience, Apple has added more options in the News app's settings. Head to Settings ? News, and you'll notice that the old Automatic Downloads section with toggles for "Download Issues" and "Download Audio" has been replaced with a News Offline Mode section and a "Download Options" submenu.
In the submenu, you can independently turn on or off automatic downloads for Recent Stories, Saved Stories, Magazine Issues, Puzzles, and Audio Stories, providing you with greater control.

News Offline Mode Storage Optimization
Also found in the new "Download Options" settings for News Offline Mode is a toggle for "Optimize Storage." The setting states: "Download smaller versions of images in stories. This turns on automatically when iPhone is low on storage."

Clear Saved Stories
In Apple News, you can go into the Following tab and tap "History" to find a "Clear" button that removes your browsing history in the app. This functionality was present before iOS 17.5 and remains unchanged. However, you couldn't clear your "Saved Stories" until now. There's now a "Clear" button in that section. Tapping it prompts you with the following message.
- Do you want to clear saved stories? Your choice affects all your iCloud devices. {Clear Saved Stories} {Cancel}
News Settings Renamed to Today Feed
In a minor change, the News Settings section that contained the "Restrict Stories in Today" switch in Settings ? News is now called Today Feed. The description for the switch remains unchanged.

iPhone does not support creating contact groups directly in the address book application, but similar functions can be achieved through the following methods: 1. Use the "Group" function in the address book application, click "Edit" > "Add Group" to create a custom group; 2. Add each contact to the corresponding group by editing it; 3. If you need to send a group message, you can create a new multi-person conversation in the information application; 4. Use iCloud or Gmail to synchronize tagged groups to facilitate the management of a large number of contacts on the computer. These methods are used in conjunction with efficient management of contact groups.

Determining the depreciation value of iPhone requires multiple factors and comparing different platforms. 2. The first choice is Apple's official replacement plan, which has a simple and transparent process, but the final valuation must be based on the actual condition of the equipment. 3. Third-party websites such as Gazelle, Swappa, etc. may provide higher quotations, but you need to pay attention to describing the real situation and avoiding the charging trap. 4. The core factors affecting value include model and storage capacity, equipment status, operator lock status, etc. Small problems may also affect the quotation. 5. If you pursue higher returns, you can choose to sell privately, but you need to weigh the time cost and transaction risks.
