GTA 6 Release Delayed For Rockstar to Create 'Perfection,' Says Take-Two CEO
May 17, 2025 am 09:09 AMIt appears that the release of GTA 6 has been postponed, as Rockstar aims to deliver a game that lives up to the lofty standards established by its forerunners. Continue reading to find out more about Take-Two's statements regarding the new release date for the game and the financial impact resulting from this delay.
Take-Two Announces Financial Loss Due to GTA 6 Delay
Delay Aims to Achieve "Creative Vision Without Constraints"
The anticipation for Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) continues to build, and though fans worldwide may be feeling the strain, Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, emphasized in their recent earnings call that the prolonged development period is a "valuable investment" to ensure Rockstar can fully realize its artistic ambitions.
Originally slated for a 2025 launch, GTA 6 is now scheduled for release on May 26, 2026. This news might be hard to accept for those eagerly awaiting the sequel to GTA 5, which debuted in 2013, but Take-Two’s CEO, Strauss Zelnick, firmly believes, as he told IGN, that the extra time will lead to a "revolutionary experience" for "a game striving for perfection."
Zelnick explained to IGN, "With just a bit more time, we saw an opportunity to ensure Rockstar Games can fulfill its creative vision without any restrictions."
Supporting this view, insider information from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier indicates that the delay of GTA 6 was unavoidable to prevent development crunch. Schreier mentioned on Bluesky on May 2 that "No one I’ve spoken to at Rockstar thought Fall 2025 was a feasible release date for a long time. The workload was too great, the time too short, and there seems to be a genuine desire from management to avoid severe crunch. GTA VI moving to 2026 has felt inevitable for months, if not longer."
However, the financial repercussions of the delay have been substantial for Take-Two. During their earnings call, as reported by Investopedia and the Wall Street Journal, the company disclosed a net loss of $3.73 billion for the fiscal fourth quarter, primarily due to a $3.55 billion "goodwill impairment charge." Their projected revenue for fiscal 2026, ranging from $5.95 billion to $6.05 billion, falls below the analysts' forecast of $7.91 billion.
Despite these challenges, according to Business Insider, Take-Two remains hopeful, pointing to strong upcoming releases like Borderlands 4 and Mafia: The Old Country.
While the delay might have dampened short-term investor expectations, the overarching sentiment from Take-Two’s leadership remains one of confidence in a groundbreaking product. As Zelnick succinctly put it in a December 2024 interview with Conner Mather, "I believe it will be exceptional and well worth the wait."
