Spectre: A Lightweight CSS Framework

Spectre CSS Framework: Lightweight, responsive and modern CSS solutions

In project development, the framework can significantly reduce development time. Popular frameworks like Bootstrap are feature-rich, but not all features are suitable for every project. This article introduces a new lightweight, modern, responsive and mobile-friendly framework - Spectre. The size after compression and gzip is about 6.8kb. In addition to the basic grid system, it also provides many other practical components such as tabs, modal boxes, and cards.

This tutorial will give you a brief overview of the framework and provide some guidance to get you started quickly.

Key Points

  • Spectre is a lightweight, modern, responsive and mobile-friendly CSS framework that significantly reduces development time. It provides basic grid system and various components such as tabs, modal boxes and cards.
  • This framework contains default styles of typography elements optimized for Asian fonts and provides classes for tables, buttons, and commonly used form elements. It also offers three navigation components – a navigation bar, a vertical menu and breadcrumbs.
  • The two important components of Spectre are modal boxes and cards, similar to the corresponding components in Bootstrap. It also includes other components such as "toast" notifications, badges, tags, pagination, and tooltips. Utility classes can be used for subtle layout adjustments.
  • While Spectre provides the least style for elements and its size is very reasonable considering the number of components it provides, it does not provide any JavaScript for interacting with its components. Users need to write their own code to implement functions such as displaying or hiding modal boxes.

Installation

You can directly download the compressed Spectre.css file, or install it using npm and Bower. Once the installation is complete, you can include files into your project like a normal style sheet.

<link rel="stylesheet" href="link/spectre.min.css" />

You can also create your own custom framework version by editing the Less file in the /src directory or by removing unwanted components from the spectre.less file. You can then use Gulp to build the CSS file from the command line.

Grid System

Spectre has a flexbox-based responsive raster system with 12 columns. The width of each column is determined by its class name. Each class starts with col- and is followed by a number to indicate the number of columns the element should occupy. For example, col-12 occupies 12 columns with a width of 100%; col-3 occupies 3 columns with a width of 25%. By default, there will be some gaps between different columns. You can eliminate this gap by adding a col-gapless class to its container. Like Bootstrap, it also provides classes such as col-md-[1-12], col-sm-[1-12], and col-xs-[1-12] to help you control the width of the element when the viewport size changes.

It also provides classes such as hide-xs, hide-sm, and hide-md for hiding elements under a specific viewport size.

When the viewport width is less than 480 pixels, all columns will be displayed as a single row. The col-xs-* class will be applied to all elements with a width greater than 480 pixels. Similarly, col-sm-* will be applied to elements with a viewport width greater than 600 pixels, and col-md-* will be applied to elements with a viewport width greater than 800 pixels.

The following code snippet creates a column with a width of 33.333% (col-4), two columns with a width of 25% (col-3) and one column with a width of 16.66% (col-2).

Use a custom rotator of multiple points to achieve the jump effect through different delay times; 3. Add a rotator in the button and switch classes through JavaScript to display the loading status. Each approach emphasizes the importance of design details such as color, size, accessibility and performance optimization to enhance the user experience.

How to create an intrinsically responsive grid layout? How to create an intrinsically responsive grid layout? Jul 02, 2025 am 01:19 AM

To create an intrinsic responsive grid layout, the core method is to use CSSGrid's repeat(auto-fit,minmax()) mode; 1. Set grid-template-columns:repeat(auto-fit,minmax(200px,1fr)) to let the browser automatically adjust the number of columns and limit the minimum and maximum widths of each column; 2. Use gap to control grid spacing; 3. The container should be set to relative units such as width:100%, and use box-sizing:border-box to avoid width calculation errors and center them with margin:auto; 4. Optionally set the row height and content alignment to improve visual consistency, such as row
