iPhones come equipped with a range of pre-installed apps. While you might be familiar with some, there are likely others you've yet to explore.

These apps can help with everything from file management and password security to automating routine tasks and sparking creativity. Here's a look at some you might have missed.

1 Shortcuts

The Shortcuts app is one of my top picks for iPhone apps, and it's indispensable for my daily use. It acts as an automation tool, enabling you to create workflows that streamline repetitive tasks on your iPhone.

The app offers a variety of pre-built shortcuts to get you started. For instance, you can use the Play Playlist shortcut to immediately start your favorite playlist on Apple Music, or the Shorten URL shortcut to condense long web links before sharing.

If you can't find a pre-made shortcut for your specific needs, you can craft your own. I've personalized a shortcut to use the iPhone Action Button to execute multiple tasks. Additionally, I have shortcuts that completely disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on my iPhone.

Beyond shortcuts, the Shortcuts app allows you to set up personal automations. These automations trigger automatically when certain conditions are met, unlike shortcuts which you run manually. For example, you can configure an automation to change the screen orientation when opening or closing specific apps, or set one to adjust the volume and start your favorite playlist on Apple Music when your phone connects to your car via Bluetooth.

If you're a student or a creative professional who thrives on visual brainstorming, Freeform is an app you should explore. It provides a scalable canvas, or "boards," where you can add elements such as text boxes, shapes, sticky notes, images, documents, and other media to flesh out your ideas.

Freeform comes with a robust set of creative tools and supports numerous file types, including PDFs, audio, and video. You can even use its built-in scanner to digitize documents or annotate them directly on the board.

One of Freeform's standout features is its collaboration capability, allowing you to invite friends or colleagues to your idea board for real-time collaboration. All your boards sync across your Apple devices, making it easy to work on them from any device.

3 Passwords

Introduced with iOS 18, the Passwords app is Apple's solution for managing your login information, passkeys, and verification codes in one convenient location. It also features a built-in password generator for creating strong, unique passwords.

Like many password managers, Passwords includes additional features such as security monitoring, which alerts you to reused or compromised passwords. It supports auto-fill to simplify logging into supported apps, and a password-sharing feature for securely sharing selected passwords with trusted contacts. Additionally, it can generate two-factor authentication codes that automatically fill in.

Getting started with Passwords is straightforward. If you're an iCloud Keychain user, your logins are automatically available in the Passwords app, and you can edit them if necessary. Users of third-party password managers can import their passwords into the Passwords app on a Mac via a CSV file.

4 Files

Files is Apple's native file manager app for iPhones. It serves as a central hub for accessing and managing files stored in local storage, iCloud, or third-party cloud services like Google Drive, Dropbox, and Box.

You can also manage files on external drives or SD cards with compatible file systems, or connect to a server to access its files and transfer them to your iPhone.

Files includes essential tools such as a persistent search bar for quick file searches, support for tags to organize files, a built-in player for audio and video, and a native document viewer for various file types. You can perform basic operations like copying, moving, renaming, deleting, or sharing files.

Beyond basic functions, Files supports additional actions like compressing files, optimizing file size, and viewing file metadata within the app. With Quick Actions, you can mark up PDFs or images, create PDFs, convert images, and remove backgrounds from images. The app also features a built-in scanner for easy document scanning and saving.

5 Measure

When you need to measure something and don't have a tape measure handy, the Measure app transforms your iPhone into a convenient digital measurement tool. Using AR (Augmented Reality), it maps your surroundings and overlays digital measurement tools on real-world objects, allowing you to measure their size, height, distances, and dimensions.

To use the Measure app, calibrate your iPhone by moving it around to recognize your environment. Place the white dot on the screen at the starting point of the measurement and tap the "+" button. Move your iPhone to the endpoint and tap the "+" button again to mark it. The distance will appear on the screen, and you can tap the text for more details.

Posts 3 The Measure app also includes a Level tool, which serves as a virtual spirit level, helping you detect angles and check if a surface is perfectly horizontal or vertical. To use it, tap the "Level" tab at the bottom of the app and hold your iPhone against the surface. If the surface is level, the screen turns green with a 0 reading; otherwise, it shows the deviation angle.

Measure is available on all iPhone models, but it performs best on iPhone 12 Pro and later, which feature LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) for precise 3D mapping, automatic edge detection, and more accurate measurements.

6 Magnifier

Finally, there's the Magnifier app, an accessibility tool that turns your iPhone into a digital magnifier. It allows you to zoom in on small text and objects in your surroundings and capture images for closer examination.

To use the Magnifier app, point the camera at the text or object you want to zoom in on and tap the "+" icon to increase the zoom level. Use the "-" icon to zoom out. In darker environments, tap the flashlight icon to enable the flash. You can also adjust brightness and apply color filters to enhance visibility.

To freeze the frame, press the Capture button. You can then tap the image thumbnail and use the Reader option to view the text, save the image to your Photos library, or share it using your preferred app.
