Even the most vocal drivers in California understand that gripping the wheel tightly through constant stop-and-go chaos only gets you so far. To navigate bumper-to-bumper traffic and arrive on time, you need assistance from technology.
Personally, I prefer Maps for its straightforward interface. It’s my choice when there’s no rush. However, when I’m pressed for time, like driving from south Orange County to Century City for an early morning meeting, I turn to Waze.
This navigation app uses machine learning and crowd-sourced information, particularly GPS data from other drivers, to determine the fastest route in real-time. If an obstacle or accident slows traffic, Waze notices and reroutes you through quieter streets, backroads, or perhaps even a hidden cobblestone bridge through the Shire to reach your destination.
Unless you’re a master navigator, these alternate routes would likely be unimaginable. This is the charm of dynamic routing, which has saved me from countless traffic jams.
Imagine, though, dealing with a different but related issue: sluggish Wi-Fi due to living in an underserved or emerging market. Pages load excruciatingly slowly, and Zoom calls frequently drop or freeze. This persistent lag impacts your business, as time equals money.
What if you could apply a similar approach to fix this issue: real-time rerouting? Instead of moving your vehicle, you’d be guiding millions of data packets through a congested digital highway. This is precisely what ExitLag aimed to achieve.
From Gaming Annoyances to a Global Solution
“Truthfully, we didn’t start out solving the global internet inequality issue,” said Lucas Stolze, ExitLag’s CEO during our conversation. “Our initial focus was addressing a pressing gaming problem: gamers hate lag.”
He’s right.
In fast-paced online games, every millisecond counts. A weak connection can cost you the final goal in a multiplayer match. These intense virtual competitions mirror their real-world counterparts. Players worldwide depend on rapid timing to execute actions. Even minor latency issues can cause “input delay,” delaying commands and disrupting synchronization among devices, players, and results.
“We developed a solution to tackle this common gaming issue,” said Stolze. “Our platform uses real-time traffic optimization and AI-driven predictive routing to find the optimal path through the web—much like Waze finds the shortest route through urban congestion.”
Central to ExitLag’s approach is a key distinction: rather than depending on default internet routing, which can be erratic and outdated, ExitLag operates autonomously. Leveraging large-scale intelligence, AI charts its own connection path, utilizing a network of local servers and cloud integrations to shift data dynamically as conditions evolve. “While we started this for gamers, it now has broader societal implications,” noted Stolze.
A Smarter Shortcut
To grasp the underlying tech, think of the internet as a sprawling freeway system, similar to the 405. At any instant, billions of devices attempt to send data across it, leading to bottlenecks. Network disruptions and server failures worsen the situation.
ExitLag uses AI to identify the best routes around these hurdles. If one path is blocked, AI doesn’t wait idly like a car stuck in rush-hour traffic. It employs multipath routing, algorithms capable of sending data along multiple paths simultaneously. When one route fails, another might succeed, drastically reducing lag times. This happens automatically, with computers communicating efficiently without significant human input.
Beyond Gaming
For gamers, a sluggish internet is frustrating. For underserved communities, it can be critical. Lives may even depend on it. Many regions, including parts of Vietnam, the Philippines, and rural America, struggle with unreliable internet due to outdated infrastructure and insufficient fiber cables.
Consider you’re the leader of a hospital in sub-Saharan Africa. One day, an 8-year-old girl is rushed into surgery with a ruptured appendix. Without immediate operation, she risks sepsis and death. Unfortunately, your facility lacks a specialist surgeon at that moment.
Previously, you relied on remote surgery, connecting to a top pediatric center in Philadelphia. To perform robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery via high-precision instruments controlled over the internet, you require ultra-low latency. Every small adjustment of the robotic arm must happen instantly.
Without consistent transmission, your young patient could perish.
Smart multipath routing systems can save the child by accessing cloud networks from providers like Amazon and integrating them with local infrastructure. Together, they form a sort of internet framework to fill connectivity gaps. ExitLag isn’t alone in using AI to address connectivity challenges, especially in remote medical care. Proximie, a cloud-based software platform, also employs AI and video compression to enable real-time telepresence, even in low-bandwidth settings.
Leveling the Playing Field
Fast, lag-free internet access is no longer optional. It’s increasingly essential in today’s interconnected world. Being disconnected, even briefly, can hinder individuals and businesses. By applying machine learning to everyday frustrations, it’s evident how AI enhances productivity and serves as a bridge, giving underserved populations unprecedented web access. Truly transformative, it reflects technology’s potential to create a brighter future for all.
