He is Coming Strategy Guide

Written by Michael Owen | He is Coming

The best strategy in He Is Coming is learning how to survive the map, win fights before they start, and build around synergy, not raw stats. Time is short, loot is random, and every tile matters.

This guide covers things like movement rules, food fusion, battle order, build types, and how to win across all modes.

How Time and Movement Work

Each run is split into weeks. A week has 3 days and 3 nights, followed by a boss fight.

  • Day lasts 50 tile steps

  • Night lasts 30 tile steps

  • Sight radius is 5 tiles during day, 3 at night

Enemies stand still during the day. At night, if they see you, they chase you. They move the same speed as you. Speed does not affect movement. You cannot outrun enemies once seen.

You can fight the boss early from the pause menu. This does not skip the rest of the week. Each boss killed unlocks 2 new item slots.

Map Strategy

Day

Loot safely. Enemies do not move. Use the full 50 tiles to visit graves, merchants, forge, and cauldrons. Plan routes to avoid being stuck during nightfall.

Night

Move carefully. Enemies will chase you if you are seen within 3 tiles. Use walls, curves, and cover to break their line of sight.

Fight Boss Early

If you are fully built or out of healing, use the pause menu to trigger the boss early. This lets you keep your tile movement and avoid bad ambushes.

Game Modes

Woodland

The standard game mode. Starts unlocked. Beating it unlocks Swampland.

Swampland

Features poison, acid, and regeneration enemies. More status effects, higher difficulty.

Kingmaker

Bosses are player-made builds. You choose 3 out of 6 item bundles before starting the run. These bundles are split between Woodland and Swampland. Defeat 5 bosses to earn a crown. Crowns unlock skins.

All enemies from both biomes are active. Read more on Kingmaker Mode here.

Combat and Stat Basics

Fights are turn-based and auto-resolved. You and the enemy take turns.

Stats include:

  • Health: If it reaches 0, you lose

  • Armor: Absorbs damage first, restores after battle

  • Attack: Damage dealt each turn

  • Speed: Determines who attacks first. If tied, you go first

Speed does not affect your movement across the map. It only affects battle turn order.

Speed Strategy

Speed wins early fights. The fighter who goes first often takes less damage and prevents enemy passives from triggering.

Speed is strongest in Week 1. After that, it should support other effects like poison or armor scaling. Read more on Speed here.

How to Build Around Speed

  • Use Saffron Talon set (Featherweight Blade and Saffron Feather)

  • Visit forge and pick Speed into Attack or Speed into Regen

  • Use food that adds on-hit effects like Acid or Thorn

  • Strike enemies before they gain armor

Enemies with high armor or healing reduce the value of Speed alone. Use it early to snowball, then swap to stronger scaling.

Food Fusion and Cauldron Strategy

Food can be fused in a Cauldron to create a single item with both effects. Adding a Honeycomb multiplies the effect.

Only food with tags should be used during challenge runs. Tagless food breaks challenge conditions.

Food Combos

  • Stone Steak plus Redwood Roast becomes Rock Roast

  • Rock Roast plus Honeycomb doubles armor gain

  • Cherry Bomb plus Spiny Chestnut gives early strike and thorns

  • Vampiric Wine plus anything gives healing and bonus effects

Use Cauldrons early in the run. Stack fusion bonuses before boss fights.

Item and Trigger Strategy

Items activate in the order of their slot. You can rearrange items at any time.

Triggers include:

  • Countdown: Activates after the item’s countdown hits 0

  • Exposed: Triggers the moment you lose all armor

  • Wounded: Triggers when you drop to half health

You can stack the same trigger type to chain effects like burst healing or high armor gain.

Wishing Well Strategy

Once you have 20 gold, you can choose one option:

  • Chests contain Rare items

  • 5 shop rerolls

Pick based on your build. Rare items help with challenge runs. Rerolls help you force key items.

Build Strategies

Bomb Build

Use Strike and Battle Start damage to wipe enemies before they act. Fuse Cherry Bomb and other damage foods. Use quick fights to stay ahead. This build falls off if the enemy gains healing or armor.

Regen and Tank Build

Fuse food into Rock Roast or Vampiric Wine with Honeycomb. Use items that grant regen, armor per turn, and healing on Wounded. Works best with slow weapons or heavy armor.

Speed Build

Start with Saffron Talon. Add forge effects and acid or thorn items. Hit first, trigger passives, and win in two turns. Best in Week 1. Weak against armor scaling.

Stone Cold (Stone Only Challenge)

Beat Leshen using only Stone-tagged items. Start with Ore Heart or Stoneslab Sword. Stack Rock Roasts, Ironstone Sandals, and Bracelet.

Use graves and reroll shops to complete the build.

Purity Build

Use Helmet of Purity with healing or Speed-based gear. Avoid poison and negative status. Best in Swampland. Weak against enemies that ignore immunity or burst damage.

Read more on our recommended builds here.

Boss Fight Tips

  • Never enter a boss fight with empty item slots

  • Move armor and healing items to early slots

  • Use fused food before triggering the boss

  • Avoid tagless items if doing a challenge run

  • Check boss traits before engaging

  • Kingmaker bosses use real player builds. Prepare for synergy

Final Blurb

Strategy in He Is Coming is honestly about planning more than luck. Use every tile wisely, scout enemies before engaging, and build toward synergy.

Speed wins early fights, food wins late fights, and the best defense is choosing when to attack.

Learn the rhythm of day and night, and you will outlive every monster on the map.

FAQ

Does Speed affect how fast I move across the map?

No. All units move one tile per step. Speed only affects battle turn order.

What happens when the week ends?

A boss appears. Killing it unlocks two more item slots.

Can I fight the boss early?

Yes. Open the pause menu and select Fight Boss. This keeps your remaining tile steps.

How do I cook Rock Roast?

Use Stone Steak and Redwood Roast in a Cauldron. Add a Honeycomb to increase its effect.

Do tagless items break challenge runs?

Yes. If a challenge requires only Stone or Wood items, tagless gear disqualifies the run.

Are bomb builds viable in late game?

No. Bomb builds fall off against enemies with armor, poison, or healing.

What do crowns from Kingmaker do?

Each crown unlocks a new skin. Earn one by defeating 5 Kingmaker bosses in a run.
