How An AI-Powered Avatar Can Make You A Better Human

It’s no secret that most people shy away from tough discussions—especially at work. Research from the professional coaching platform Bravely shows that up to 70% of employees avoid challenging conversations with supervisors, coworkers, or direct reports, and 53% respond to toxic situations by simply ignoring them. According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development’s Good Work Index 2024, only 29% of U.K. workers experiencing job-related conflict reported it to HR or a manager, and just 17% addressed the issue directly with the involved party—highlighting a widespread preference for silence over confrontation.

Efforts to train individuals in navigating these difficult dialogues—whether at home or in the office—have been inconsistent. While MBA programs often include communication training, the majority of managers don’t hold such degrees, and there’s no standardized approach for having hard talks with loved ones. However, the emergence of embodied conversational AI and virtual reality is changing the game. Now, people can rehearse these high-stakes conversations with lifelike avatars, helping them build confidence and emotional readiness before engaging in real-life interactions.

Talespin, now part of the Cornerstone learning management ecosystem, provides immersive, AI-driven role-play scenarios—both pre-built and customizable. A PWC study on its training modules revealed that users were four times more focused, 275% more confident in their abilities, 3.75 times more emotionally engaged, and trained four times faster than with traditional methods. The platform has been adopted by major organizations including Amazon, Coles Supermarkets, and Meta.

In the U.K., Virti (full disclosure: I collaborated with Virti on multiple projects in the past year but am no longer affiliated) partnered with Amazon in 2024 to improve managerial training in its warehouses. Many frontline supervisors were young, newly promoted from peer roles, and lacked formal leadership experience. Organizing in-person practice sessions at scale was impractical. VR and AI avatars offered a solution.

The outcomes were striking: 92% of trained managers reported feeling more confident when handling sensitive conversations. The ability to rapidly design, customize, and deploy training scenarios at scale proved transformative. The goal wasn’t to memorize scripts—it was to build resilience, practice managing pushback or hostility, and learn from mistakes in a judgment-free environment.

Virti also empowers users to create their own training content using AI prompts and a library of avatars. Anyone with access can design and interact with virtual humans, though managerial oversight is recommended to ensure content aligns with organizational standards. Reviewing the types of scenarios being built can also help leaders identify recurring challenges or systemic workplace issues.

The healthcare sector is another area where communication is paramount. Connexions launched in July 2025 to address these needs and is currently piloting programs at Harvard Medical School and McGill University. The platform trains medical professionals and offers conversational tools for patients—addressing critical gaps in care. For example, many patients who are overweight report that doctors immediately attribute their health issues to weight, overlooking actual symptoms. An AI avatar, blind to physical appearance, avoids such biases and focuses solely on the presented concerns.

One major advantage of AI-powered avatars over traditional training methods—like static videos or human role-players—is their adaptability. Need to simulate a team member with limited English proficiency? A well-designed AI can handle that seamlessly. Adjust a prompt, and the same avatar can shift from quiet and hesitant to talkative and defensive—something far harder for a human actor to replicate consistently.

As AI evolves, the focus will increasingly shift toward uniquely human skills: empathy, emotional intelligence, and effective communication—areas where machines can assist but never replace us. These avatars aren’t meant to substitute real dialogue; they’re tools for rehearsal and reflection. By lowering the anxiety around difficult conversations, this technology fosters more meaningful connections—with colleagues, friends, and family. The future edge won’t come from automating routines, but from training minds to sit with discomfort—and grow through it.
