Video Taking Up All Your Phone Storage? Here's the Easiest Way to Archive It
Videos take up a lot of space—here’s how to clear some room.
1 As most users are aware, Google Photos currently doesn’t offer much flexibility when it comes to choosing which photos and videos get uploaded to the cloud. Your options are limited: back up everything in full resolution, which consumes a lot of storage, or opt for a compressed, lower-quality version to save space. Neither option is perfect—especially if you're not paying for additional Google One storage.Keep in mind, the era of unlimited free storage for lower-quality uploads ended in 2020-2021. Nowadays, many users are either hitting their storage limits or paying to expand them. This upcoming feature could be a game-changer by significantly slowing down how quickly your storage fills up.
According to Android Authority, who spotted early signs of this update, Google is developing a smart new option that would let you back up only your "favorite" photos and videos. Evidence found in the latest Google Photos app version (v7.39) suggests that this feature is actively in development.
Once activated, the app would automatically back up only the photos and videos you've marked as favorites—those you’ve liked or tapped the heart icon on. Everything else, like test shots, duplicates, or casual snaps, would stay only on your device. This means you’d preserve only the most meaningful memories in the cloud while saving valuable storage space.
Imagine never having to worry about 10 nearly identical photos of the same moment clogging up your cloud—all except the one you actually liked would stay local. That’s the promise of this new functionality.
Let’s be honest—many of us are struggling with full Google storage. Between high-resolution smartphone cameras, 4K video recording, AI-generated content, and endless screenshots, storage fills up faster than ever. This new selective backup option could be a much-needed relief.
While the feature isn’t live yet, the presence of related code in the app indicates it’s likely coming in a future update—though there’s no official release date or guarantee. Fingers crossed it rolls out to all Android users and isn’t limited to Pixel devices.
