Team GO Leader Cliff makes his return to Pokémon GO in March 2025, bringing with him a tough but familiar battle challenge for trainers aiming to reach the pinnacle of Team GO Rocket confrontations. The sinister Team GO Rocket continues to be a persistent threat, and this month is no exception. To earn the right to face the notorious Giovanni, you’ll first need to overcome Cliff, along with fellow Leaders Arlo and Sierra.
After defeating six Team GO Rocket Grunts, you’ll gain the ability to encounter Leaders at PokéStops or through Rocket Balloons. To successfully beat them—including Cliff—it's crucial to use Pokémon that counter their lineups. Knowing exactly which Pokémon appear on Cliff’s team and which types are effective against them is vital for victory.

Consistent Lineup This Month
In March 2025, Cliff sticks with the same team he’s used in previous months, relying predominantly on Fighting- and Ground-type Shadow Pokémon. As before, he begins battle with Cubone from Generation One, a Ground-type Pokémon.
All of Cliff’s Pokémon are in their Shadow forms, boosting their overall power. If you have access to Shadow versions of strong counter Pokémon, they’re highly recommended for this fight.
For his second Pokémon, he randomly selects one from a trio: Fighting-type Machoke, Ground-type Marowak, or the dual-type Fighting/Ghost Annihilape. For his final and strongest pick, he chooses one of three powerful options: Poison/Flying Crobat, Rock/Dark Tyranitar, or pure Fighting-type Machamp.
Wave | Pokémon and Type | Weaknesses | Counters |
---|---|---|---|
1 | (Shadow) Cubone - Ground | Grass, Ice, Water | - Swampert - Kyogre - Mamoswine - Gyarados - Zarude |
2 | (Shadow) Machoke - Fighting | Fairy, Flying, Psychic | - Gardevoir - Alakazam - Mewtwo - Rayquaza - Xerneas |
2 | (Shadow) Marowak - Ground | Grass, Ice, Water | - Swampert - Kyogre - Mamoswine - Gyarados - Zarude |
2 | (Shadow) Annihilape - Fighting/Ghost | Fairy, Flying, Ghost, Psychic | - Alakazam - Gardevoir - Xerneas - Mewtwo |
3 | (Shadow) Crobat - Poison/Flying | Electric, Ice, Psychic, Rock | - Rhyperior - Mamoswine - Alakazam - Tyranitar - Mewtwo |
3 | (Shadow) Tyranitar - Rock/Dark | Fighting, Bug, Fairy, Grass, Ground, Steel, Water | - Lucario - Heracross - Conkeldurr - Terrakion - Xerneas |
3 | (Shadow) Machamp - Fighting | Fairy, Flying, Psychic | - Gardevoir - Alakazam - Mewtwo - Rayquaza - Xerneas |
The good news for March is that Cliff’s team shares several overlapping weaknesses, making it easier to prepare an efficient counter team. You can cover all his possible Pokémon with just two or three types, leaving room for a backup option. Always start with a Pokémon strong against his opener, Cubone, who is weak to Grass, Ice, or Water moves. A top choice right now is Mamoswine, an Ice-type powerhouse that also handles Marowak and Crobat effectively if they appear.
It’s also smart to include a Fairy-type Pokémon, as all of Cliff’s non-Ground types are vulnerable to Fairy moves. Xerneas stands out as the best Fairy-type in the game and counters Machoke, Annihilape, Tyranitar, and Machamp. For a third option, consider Mewtwo, one of the strongest Psychic-types. It’s super-effective against four of Cliff’s Pokémon—Machoke, Annihilape, Crobat, and Machamp—making it a reliable switch-in when needed.
Rewards for Defeating Cliff (March 2025)
Shadow Pokémon and a Rare Egg Up for Grabs
Just like other Team GO Rocket Leaders, defeating Cliff grants you the opportunity to catch his lead Pokémon: Shadow Cubone. While not top-tier, its evolved form, Shadow Marowak, can be a solid choice in specific PvP formats within the GO Battle League. Additionally, you’ll receive a mysterious red 12km Egg, provided you have space in your incubator. This special Egg can hatch into some of the rarest Pokémon in Pokémon GO after walking the full distance.
You’ll also earn a selection of useful items to aid in future battles and Pokémon management. These include an Unova Stone, 2x Max Potions, 2x Max Revives, 4x Hyper Potions, and 4x Revives. You’ll receive three of these at random, as long as your item inventory isn’t full.
Team GO Rocket Leader Cliff is more manageable this March and can be efficiently defeated in Pokémon GO with a well-prepared team of Ice-, Fairy-, and Psychic-type Pokémon.
