That incredible-looking mod reimagining Fallout 1 in Doom is still alive, and there's a glorious new trailer
Aug 01, 2025 am 01:44 AMIt’s been half a decade since artist Alexander "Red888guns" Berezin first captured attention with his bold concept: reimagining the bleak, isometric wasteland of Fallout through the lens of a 3D Doom-style first-person shooter. That early vision, rough but evocative, left fans eager to see how far he might take it. Now, at last, we have a glimpse of what that fully realized dream could look like—thanks to a newly released, deeply immersive trailer for Fallout: Bakersfield.
The project first surfaced as little more than an animated gif—a fleeting window into an alternate reality where the ghoul-infested ruins of Necropolis (the in-universe name for Bakersfield, California) are rendered in the gritty, fast-paced aesthetic of the original Doom. That modest tease quickly gained cult status. Since then, Red888guns has been quietly transforming that initial proof-of-concept into a tangible, playable experience.
Two years after the first tease, fans were treated to a brief but powerful update: around ten seconds of actual gameplay footage built in the GZDoom Engine. Though short, it showcased a dramatic leap in atmosphere and interactivity—a true first-person plunge into a decaying, radioactive hellscape. Now, with several more years of refinement, the latest trailer delivers a far richer and more polished vision, surpassing all previous glimpses in scope and intensity.
The new trailer opens with a deliberate callback to the original Fallout teaser—except this time, instead of a flickering black-and-white TV, the camera pulls back from a vintage transistor radio. From its speakers warbles the haunting, vintage croon of I'd Climb The Highest Mountain by The Ink Spots, setting a tone of nostalgic dread as the ruined streets of Bakersfield unfold in grim detail.
The mood shifts as the perspective becomes fully first-person. We step into the worn boots of a jumpsuit-clad wanderer, cautiously navigating a world soaked in grime and ruin. The ambiance is thick—every creak, distant howl, and flickering light pulls you deeper into the desolation. Then, tension erupts: a confrontation with armed mutants, fought not with a firearm, but a bloodied knife. Soon after, gunfire erupts, crates and fridges are looted in classic Fallout fashion, and a tense dialogue sequence unfolds with a menacing antagonist—before everything collapses into chaos.
Red888guns, who is also contributing art to New Blood Interactive’s still-unannounced Fallout-inspired CRPG, is developing Fallout: Bakersfield in collaboration with Denis Berezin. The trailer concludes with a quick progress update: their non-commercial, Doom (1993) total conversion is now 60% complete. A cryptic, partially obscured release date—??.??.202?—hints at a launch sometime in the near future. While exact timing remains a mystery, one thing is clear: the wait is nearing its end.
Meanwhile, the Fallout universe continues its cultural resurgence. Amazon’s acclaimed live-action series returns for a second season this December, promising a journey to a fan-favorite location. On the modding front, last year brought the ambitious Fallout: London, further proving the enduring appeal of expanding the franchise’s retro-futuristic wasteland in bold new directions.
