'Obscene': Civ 7 Players Have An All-New Reason To Be Upset
Aug 01, 2025 am 01:43 AMSid Meier's Civilization 7 has been struggling to gain steady footing since its release just five months ago, with players expressing disappointment over missing features, clunky UI, and a generally underwhelming experience compared to earlier entries in the series. Although a recent patch aims to address many of these concerns, the launch of the Right to Rule DLC has only added fuel to the fire, giving fans another reason to voice their frustration.
Despite being included with the Founder's Edition, the Right to Rule DLC has sparked backlash online—particularly on Reddit—where players are calling the standalone price of $30 "outrageous" for offering only two new leaders, four civilizations, and a few additional Wonders. To make it worse, only half of the DLC is currently available, with the remaining content not expected until at least September.
Civ 7 Fans Are Not Happy With Right To Rule DLC Cost
Players Aren't Getting Much Bang For Their Buck
Patch 1.2.3, released yesterday, marked a significant improvement in Civilization 7’s gameplay and responsiveness, but the monetization strategy is clearly out of step with what the community expects. Civ fans have long memories, and they’re quick to compare current offerings with past expansions—something that doesn’t work in Right to Rule’s favor.
Act Fast - The Most Popular Civ Game Ever Will Be Free For A Limited Time Starting Next Week
There's an incredible opportunity to play one of the best Civ games of all time for free, but it's only for a limited time starting July 17th.
Take *Civilization 6’s* *Rise & Fall* expansion, for example. It introduced the Great Ages system, added governors and loyalty mechanics, and came packed with nine new civilizations and leaders, plus numerous new units, buildings, wonders, and resources—**all at the same $30 price point as *Civ 7’s* Right to Rule DLC**. When viewed side by side, the new DLC feels like a major downgrade in value, especially for loyal fans who’ve stuck with the game despite its rocky start.Even more frustrating is the fact that "four civilizations" is somewhat misleading due to Civ 7’s Age Transition system. Each civilization can only be played for about one-third of a game, switching out when a new Age begins. This drastically limits how much players actually get to experience the new content, making the $30 price tag feel even more unjustified.
Civ 7 Should Rethink Its DLC Strategy & Pricing
The Current DLC Model Isn't Winning Any Favor Among An Already-Bitter Fanbase
Right now, there’s little motivation for players to buy the Right to Rule DLC. You’re paying full price for only half the content, with the rest locked behind a months-long wait. At $30, the value simply doesn’t add up—especially when compared to the rich, fully-featured expansions of previous Civilization titles.
For a fanbase already disillusioned by Civ 7’s incomplete launch, this DLC feels like a profit-driven move with little regard for player satisfaction.
Sid Meier's Civilization 7 should be focused on rebuilding trust with its dedicated community—players who love the franchise and want to see it succeed despite its flaws. While the pricing decisions likely come from 2K rather than the developers at Firaxis, the end result is the same from a player’s perspective: the Right to Rule DLC comes across as a transparent cash grab, offering far less than what fans have come to expect from the series.
