Aug 01, 2025 am 01:19 AMFormer Capcom producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi is set to unveil a new 3D action RPG this year — but he’s quick to clarify it won’t resemble Devil May Cry, despite his deep ties to the franchise.
As a Devil May Cry fan, the past few years haven’t exactly been encouraging. Devil May Cry 5 launched in 2019 and went on to become one of Capcom’s best-selling titles of all time. However, since then, key figures behind the series have departed the company. Combat designer Ryota Suzuki and long-time director Hideaki Itsuno have both left Capcom. Though Kobayashi didn’t work on DMC5, he too exited Capcom not long after, going on to found GPTRACK50 Studio under NetEase — the publisher behind Marvel Rivals.
Kobayashi, known for producing iconic Capcom titles such as Devil May Cry, Resident Evil 4, Killer 7, and Dragon's Dogma, has been with NetEase since 2022. In a recent interview with Famitsu (via Automaton), he revealed that GPTRACK50 Studio is preparing to show its first game this year. “I said I wanted to announce it by the end of the year, and as a man of my word, I want to keep that promise,” Kobayashi stated, adding, “As for how far along development is, we’re about to start voice recording.”
Details remain limited, but Kobayashi has been describing the project as a “3D action RPG.” While the game will emphasize action, he’s making a point of using the action RPG label to manage expectations. “I originally called it an action game, but because I’m involved, many assumed it would be like Devil May Cry. It’s not right to let people expect something it’s not, so I’ve started calling it an action RPG instead.”
In a previous conversation with Automaton, he emphasized that the game isn’t akin to Dragon’s Dogma either. He even mentioned that colleagues have told him it feels “not Kobayashi-like.” When he invited a designer he’s worked with for over two decades to join the project, the response was surprise: “He said it wasn’t what he expected.” Kobayashi took that as a win. “I was glad — it meant I’d managed to create something fresh.”
Devil May Cry creator Hideki Kamiya says if Dragon's Dogma's director hadn't taken over his hack-and-slash series, "there would have been no Bayonetta."
