In Grounded 2, surviving the backyard wilderness doesn’t have to be a solo mission. Just like in the original game, you can team up with up to three friends and tackle the giant bugs together. But if you’re the independent type, there’s a better way to roll — meet your new best friend, the Buggy.
Buggies are rideable companions, and your first unlockable mount in Grounded 2 is the Red Soldier Ant Buggy. Earning this powerful ally is one of your earliest major goals in the game, and trust us — it’s a game-changer worth the effort.
Build The Hatchery
After unlocking the Snackbar Ranger Outpost, located at the edge of the Entrance and Snackbar Front zones, you’ll gain access to a new objective: incubate and tame your very own Red Soldier Ant.
To construct the Hatchery, gather these materials:
- Weed Stems (x6)
- Acorn Top
- Acorn Shell (x5)
- Mite Fuzz (x5)
All of these are commonly found across the park. Mites spawn near the entrance to the Snackbar Ranger Park, while acorns litter the elevated area between the Snackbar and the central tree.
The trickiest item? Weed Stems. You can’t harvest them from hardy weeds without a level two omnitool axe, but here’s a shortcut: dandelions can be cut down to yield Weed Stems — just enough to complete your build.
Hatching Your Red Soldier Ant
Rather than capturing a wild ant, you’ll need to find a Red Soldier Ant Egg and hatch a young one yourself. Note: these are not the same as regular red ant eggs found in typical anthills. You’ll need to venture to a specific location.
Locating the Red Soldier Ant Egg
Head to the Hatchery Anthill: South Entrance, nestled in the northeastern part of the Entrance area. Before diving in, make sure you’re well-equipped with armor, weapons, torches, and healing items — you’ll face plenty of Red Soldier Ants and even an O.R.C. Orb Weaver Spider on your descent.
The layout is simple — follow the tunnel downward, fighting off enemies, until you reach a mysterious lab with a glowing egg suspended in a liquid-filled container. That’s your prize.
Hatching the Egg
Now that you’ve secured the egg, you’ll need a few saddle components to ride your future buggy. For the Red Soldier Ant, you’ll need:
- Grub Hide (x2)
- Sprig (x3)
- Acorn Shell
Sprigs and Acorn Shells are easy to come by, but Grub Hides require the Omnitool Shovel. Look for spots in the dirt where you hear a burrowing noise and see soil shifting. Use your shovel to dig — most of the time, you’ll uncover a harmless grub you can quickly dispatch for materials. Occasionally, you might hit a larva, so be ready to fight.
With all materials in hand — including the precious egg — return to the Hatchery and begin the hatching process. It takes 12 in-game hours to complete. You can either continue exploring or go to sleep to skip most of the wait.
Remember: hatching isn’t automatic. Once the timer ends, you must manually initiate the hatch to bring your new buggy to life.
Riding the Red Soldier Ant Buggy
The Red Soldier Ant Buggy is a massive upgrade in nearly every way. Benefits include:
- Faster movement and higher jumps
- Ability to knock down multiple grass blades with a single charged attack
- A second inventory for extra storage
- Increased carrying capacity — up to 12 grass blades vs. your usual 5
Best of all, while riding, all red ants treat you as an ally. That means you can safely re-enter their anthill and explore freely — no more fighting your way through hostile territory.
Your ant can also break through special barriers blocking paths. These obstacles are marked with an ant icon, signaling that your buggy can clear the way.
However, the buggy has a key limitation: combat. While it can perform regular and charged attacks and even parry, you can’t use your personal weapons while mounted. You’re limited to the ant’s natural attacks, which means less flexibility against different enemy types.
But there’s a workaround: recruit a worker ant. Once recruited, it will follow you and automatically attack hostile creatures. Though not a heavy hitter, it draws enemy attention — giving you time to escape or strike from the back of your buggy.
Reviving Your Buggy
If your buggy takes too much damage, it will be knocked down. Don’t panic — buggies can’t die permanently.
After clearing nearby threats, simply approach your buggy and hold the interact button to revive it. If you don’t act quickly, it will become fully knocked out and vanish. If you’re far from base, that could mean a long walk back.
After a four-minute cooldown, you can respawn your buggy either through the quick menu or, if built, at your Ant Nest. There are no other penalties — so if you’re feeling sneaky, you can even sacrifice your buggy as a distraction and make a clean getaway.
