Combat in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is much the same as the original, and Henry first has to learn some powerful techniques from experienced swords wielders to succeed in battle. After his nasty fall at the start of the sequel, Henry must re-learn a lot of the skills he developed in Kingdom Come: Deliverance, including his prowess with the sword.

Fortunately, Henry is told early on about the location of a master swordsman who might be willing to help him regain his confidence. If Henry makes his way to the nomad camp in the southwest corner of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2's map, he can find Tomcat, who will be happy to teach him some combat techniques. Some of these combos have proven difficult for players to get right away, and they're necessary to learn if Henry is to use the powerful Master Strike move.

After you've found Tomcat and asked him to train you, jump into the arena and talk to him again. He'll first teach you the basic right-left-right combo, and after doing that twice, he'll tell you to perform a more advanced combo, the horizontal strike.

This is easier to do than Tomcat makes out. First, move your mouse or joystick to raise your sword. Strike down, then quickly move it right and attack again. That second attack will bring your sword over to the left, so you can attack again quickly once more to complete the combo. You only need to make two movements with the sword to do the combo, as the momentum will move it into place for the final attack.

Tomcat will then teach Henry the Master Strike if he beats him in a duel, which is quite hard as Tomcat is an aggressive fighter. The combos he initially teaches you are useless against him, as he will interrupt the combo with his own Master Strike. Here are some things I learned that make the fight easier.

You can maneuver your enemy when you block their attacks. Direct their weapons one way with a block, then attack the opposite side where they're open.

One of the first things I recommend is not to challenge Tomcat right after learning the basic combos. You'll likely not have high enough skills in KCD2, like strength and agility, and be poorly equipped. Tomcat likes to use the Master Strike that ends with a stab to the chest, so make sure you're wearing a cuirass and chainmail to reduce that damage. Using a shield also makes the fight a lot easier, as Tomcat likes to be aggressive, and blocking his attacks is crucial. Don't rush the fight; you only need to hit Tomcat a few times to beat him, so be patient and attack him when it's safe.

Once you've beaten Tomcat and learned the Master Strikes, you'll be well on your way to mastering the combat of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. Henry will encounter more powerful enemies throughout the game, so check in with Tomcat and other swordmasters throughout to keep your skills and weapon sharp.
