Urban reveals he was “very proactive” in pursuing the role. As it turns out, he’s no stranger to the Mortal Kombat franchise—though mostly from the losing end of the controller, regularly defeated by his more skilled, gaming-savvy children. That same self-aware, humble humor will feed into his portrayal of Cage, which he describes as a journey of transformation and personal growth.

“When we meet Johnny, he’s missing that classic spark fans of the games will recognize,” Urban explains. “We’re starting him off at rock bottom. His career’s in freefall, he’s got zero self-confidence, and he’s completely let his martial arts training slide.”

“But right when he hits his lowest, he’s called upon to become a warrior for Earthrealm—to fight for the survival of humanity itself,” Urban continues. “We begin with him in one place, and the audience gets to witness his evolution. As he starts to believe in himself again, that confidence returns… and with it, the trademark arrogance, the swagger—those elements start to emerge.”
