The Enhanced Edition was both developed and published by Aspyr, but the original 2006 version was created by Obsidian Entertainment and released by Atari solely for PC.

Despite being a sequel, you’re not required to have played the first Neverwinter Nights to enjoy this one. As I mentioned earlier, this version includes four campaigns, and while you can technically play them in any order, I recommend sticking to the sequence provided in the main menu.

“You don’t have to start with the original campaign, but it can serve as a helpful introduction—especially for those unfamiliar with the D&D 3.5e system,” Reese explained. “The base campaign introduces you to the game world and mechanics, and if you finish it, you can carry your character into Mask of the Betrayer. Alternatively, MotB also lets you start with a level 18 character. Storm of Zehir and Mysteries of Westgate are self-contained adventures, so no prior progress is needed—they’re great whether you’re continuing or starting fresh.”

Over time, it has gone through many revisions. Currently, most players use D&D 5e, which is the system behind games like Baldur’s Gate 3. But since Neverwinter Nights 2 is nearly two decades old, 5e didn’t exist when it launched. Instead, it runs on D&D 3.5e.

“5e was built on the foundation of 3.5e,” Reese noted. “While 3.5e may feel more complex to some, it works well in a classic D&D game where the computer handles the calculations. Players get a lot of freedom in character creation, class selection, and overall gameplay. Those looking for a deep and authentic D&D experience will feel right at home in Neverwinter Nights 2. I personally enjoy playing with the 3.5e ruleset.”

Additionally, as I mentioned in my review, the game offers “playstyle packages” during character creation to help guide your build. It can even recommend stat points and feats for your character and companions as they level up. There’s a lot going on, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming if you take it step by step.

Neverwinter Nights 2: Enhanced Edition—What’s Different This Time Around?

As the title suggests, this isn’t a remake or even a full remaster. It’s more of a polished port, restoring functionality, improving performance, supporting more platforms, and slightly upgrading textures.

“We’ve made several gameplay adjustments, including adding controller support with a dedicated UI, visual updates like improved textures and assets,” Reese said. “We’ve added cross-platform multiplayer so players can join friends regardless of platform. All four enhanced campaigns are included—Mask of the Betrayer, Storm of Zehir, and Mysteries of Westgate. There are also some smaller changes we’ll let players discover for themselves.”

So if you were expecting major overhauls, you might be let down. However, if you play on Steam Deck, consoles, or had trouble running the original on PC, this is a smooth and faithful way to experience Neverwinter Nights 2. In fact, if you’ve never played before, this is the version to get regardless of platform, as all existing mods and user-made campaigns still work on PC.

“Most of the console updates focus on visuals and usability,” Reese added. “Menus have been reworked, controls adjusted, and the overall experience refined for controller use. Alongside controller support, we’ve achieved Verified status on Steam Deck. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference. If you want to play on a console or on the go with something like the Steam Deck, we want to give players that freedom.”

Neverwinter Nights 2: Enhanced Edition—Will There Be A Physical Copy?

If you’ve followed my work on Forbes, social media, or elsewhere over the years, you know I’m a big advocate for physical game releases, especially in the gaming industry. I almost always buy physical when I can, and I own nearly 800 games spanning from Atari consoles, NES, Genesis, and beyond.

So naturally, I hoped for a physical release of Neverwinter Nights 2: Enhanced Edition, but it doesn’t seem to be part of the initial launch plans—though it’s not completely ruled out.

“We always consider physical releases,” Reese said. “There’s a certain value in owning a physical copy, and it opens the door to collector’s editions and other special editions. I can’t confirm anything right now, but it’s something we think about for all our titles.”

I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Since I received a PS5 code for review, I’d definitely buy a physical Switch version if it becomes available—especially if it supports Switch 2. I’d also love to see cross-save functionality added in the future.

“If you’ve played any D&D-inspired or related games, you’ll quickly get the hang of the mechanics,” Reese said. “Much like Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2 or the Pillars of Eternity series, this game uses a real-time combat system that simulates turn-based gameplay. New players won’t find the learning curve too steep, and they’ll still have a great time. It’s a fantastic game that both D&D veterans and newcomers can enjoy.

“Take your time, dive into the story, explore different characters, races, and classes, and most importantly—have fun. My personal favorite is a lawful good Paladin on a classic hero’s journey, smiting evil wherever it appears. That could be a great starting point for new players.”
