Avowed: Best Ranger/Wizard Multiclass Guide (Abilities, Attributes, & Weapons)
Jul 31, 2025 am 12:47 AMCreating the right build for a mixture of Wizard and Ranger abilities in Avowed can be a little tricky, but it is extremely fun. There are a few ways that you could do this and be able to handle whatever is thrown at you, but some aspects of it are stronger than others. To make the most of this build, there are several things you will want to do and some weapons you should prioritize finding.
With Avowed passing milestones before the official launch, there are a lot of fans already playing. It’s a great game, with a lot of RPG elements and a fair number of weapon choices that don’t feel too complicated. It may not be as customizable as other games are, but it feels like the right amount for this kind of game. Even a more specific build like the Ranger and Wizard option still has a lot of flexibility in how it works.

Best Abilities For A Ranger Wizard Multiclass Build
Getting The Right Abilities At The Right Time
You get around 29 Ability Points as the game progresses to fill out your skill tree, which you can respec at any time with the right amount of gold which you should do if you want to experiment. There are many more abilities than that, and you can level some of them up in rank, so keep that in mind as you are picking which ones are the most valuable to your build. Notably, you cannot really choose which Godlike Abilities in Avowed you get.
For me, I ignored the spells on the Wizard tree. You can get the spells you really want from the Grimoires, although I did take Minor Missiles since it is a separate ability. You will want to take at least one level of Grimoire Mastery when you get the chance. Plan to take all four when you get to the point where you might need it. The Wizard skills I took, or plan on taking, are listed below:
Wizard Ability To Claim |
Level It Becomes Available |
Notes |
---|---|---|
Minor Missiles |
Immediately |
This is an Active Power that summons projectiles that seek out enemies. It is not a specific Element so it is neutral, and it is one of the best Abilities in the game. Rank it up all the way. |
Armored Essence |
Immediately |
This decreases the Essence penalty for lighter armor. This is useful since you will want to be as light on your feet as possible. This does not have to be leveled up all the way. |
Grimoire Mastery |
Player Level 5 |
This allows you to use Grimoires of higher levels. This is essential to the build, rank it up all the way as soon as you can. |
Wand Mastery |
Immediately |
This increased wand damage. Take this and level it if you want to use wands over guns. |
Harvest Essence |
Player Level 10 |
This gives you extra Essence when enemies are defeated. Take this if you find yourself low on Essence often. |
Level 15 Elemental "Spirit of X" Abilities |
Player Level 15 |
These are all the same, and they increase Elemental damage by a certain amount. Take one if you find yourself using an Element-specific Grimoire or want to increase one of them more than others. |
On the Ranger side, this really depends on how much you want to do. The Tanglefoot ability is very useful, but you can have your companion do it for you instead.
I also suggest taking 1 rank of the Fighter ability Constant Recovery, since that was a crucial part of surviving the early game, although that can also be swapped out once you reach a higher rank with much better armor. Constant Recovery allows you to passively recover some of your HP in combat.
Evasive is very useful in the early game, as many of the early bosses will lunge for you and dodging is essential. Scavenger is also very useful but might be one you want to switch out once you are no longer as focused on upgrading weapons.
Ranger Abilities To Claim |
Level It Becomes Available |
Notes |
---|---|---|
Tanglefoot |
Immediately |
Allows you to root an enemy in place. Take this if you'd prefer to immobilize them instead of having the Wizard attack. Notably, you can take and switch between both. |
Evasive |
Immediately |
This reduces the Stamina it takes to Dodge. Take at least 1 rank very early. |
Scavenger |
Player Level 5 |
This gives you extra upgrade materials. Use this if you want upgrading to be a little easier and swap it out later. |
Finesse/Marksmanship |
Immediately |
These increase your one-handed melee attacks/ranged attacks respectively. Take these if you prefer either of these over a wand. |
Bear Ally |
Player Level 15 |
This one gives you an extra ally for battle for a set period of time. Take this if you find you need a little boost. |
Sniper |
Player Level 15 |
This increases all ranged weapons, including wands. Take this as soon as you can and level it up. |
Critical Strike |
Player Level 15 |
This is a great boost. If you are doing a lot of sniping, this is a good one to take. |
Flurry of Blows |
Player Level 20 |
This is a separate active ability that allows you to increase several stats. You can replace either former Ranger active power for this one. |
Staggering Shot |
Player Level 20 |
Take this instead of/in addition to Marksmanship if you are using guns the most. |
After that, the paths you want to take depend on what you want your main source of damage to be. For me, I found a combination of a good Grimoire, a one-handed sword, and a gun worked the best, but you could easily switch out either the sword or the gun for a wand instead. That will determine whether you take something like Finesse and Marksmanship or Wand Mastery.

Which Ones Work Best For These Classes
As a more ranged character either way, you are going to want to focus on stats that help you keep your distance and increase your damage. Intelligence is important to have high Essence, and Dexterity will keep you moving. Otherwise, you can sort of pick and choose based on what you want to be able to persuade people to do.
Might, although typically more of a Fighter stat in Avowed, does affect all damage you do, including magic damage, so you will likely want to put some points in it to up your combat abilities. While there are a lot of situations you can resolve peacefully, it is impossible to have a completely pacifist run as you will get attacked by creatures as you travel and there are quests where you are directly asked to collect a bounty.

Options To Keep You Going
There are a lot of different ways you could go, but the main thing you will want to decide is how you will go into combat, whether that is with a wand, a gun, a melee weapon, or a Grimoire. I found it easiest to have a Grimoire and a melee weapon with a two-handed ranged weapon like an arquebus in the early game. I later switched things up once I started finding unique weapons, but the idea remained the same.
As I headed to the Emerald Stairs, I had the following weapons:
A:
- Last Light Of Day
- Boethel’s Grimoire
B:
- Caeroc’s Pride
- Common Grimoire of Greater Elements
For later game builds, something like the Whisper of Exiles wand, Eilara’s Grimoire, or Heavenstrike are good options to sub in. Whether you want the two-handed arquebus or a pistol and a different Grimoire is up to you. I found the arquebus was a little more satisfying and better at distance but quite slow, while the pistol was faster and having the extra spells felt good.
Both trees focus on ranged weapons, but I found having the one-handed sword very useful. While Boethel’s Grimoire gives you a magical melee weapon, having one as you need it without consuming Essence is nice. If you can dodge and move around fast enough, however, having all ranged weapons is not necessarily a bad build either. As for armor, stay light and quick on your feet, emphasizing anything you find that makes the stats you're using the most better.

Tips & Tricks For Various Weaknesses & Hard Enemies
There are a lot of things to consider, but the main thing you will need is flexibility. You will be more vulnerable without a shield, so you will need to be aware of your surroundings and close the distance as needed. Kai works well as a companion because he can taunt the enemy, and using something like Tanglefoot is useful to keep the enemy from charging you as you fire off spells and bullets.
The Thalla boss fight can be difficult early in the game if you haven’t gotten upgraded gear, and even then it is challenging as he closes the distance very fast and has a large AOE attack. For enemies like that, you will want to instead create distance, use frost powers and Tanglefoot to keep the enemy down, and use critical hits as necessary.
I picked accessories that improved Critical Hit damage, along with a ring that dealt Poison damage when an enemy received a Critical Hit. While it doesn’t work on every enemy, it’s a nice bit of extra damage in addition to all of the other elemental damage already being directed toward your enemies. If it felt like a situation couldn’t be dealt with at range, I would use the Sword/Grimoire combo. If not, I would head for the arquebus or the pistol, depending on what I had equipped at the time.
In swarm situations, it can be hard to find a great way to deal with them if they have more than 1 Skull next to their names. The Yellowband camp was a difficult situation early on, but I was able to find a house to stand in and take down enemies with the arquebus as they came to me. This worked because there was a lot of very strong bears that couldn’t come inside, and it gave me time to reload the gun. It was a bit of a cheese, but it worked.
The main weakness of this build is the vulnerability of enemies overwhelming you. However, if you can’t find a place to snipe enemies from, you can just keep moving fast and shooting or slinging spells as you have the chance. Don’t slow down or give them a chance to catch up, and things like Arcane Veil and Bristling Frost can give you the edge in that situation. Otherwise, the Ranged/Wizard build is a fun spell-slinging time in Avowed.
