Artifacts are a new type of Great Work to collect in Sid Meier’s Civilization 7, but the game doesn’t make it easy to figure out where to get them. Unlike other collectibles, such as Codices, the game’s Civlopedia doesn’t have an entry for Artifacts that handily explains their purpose or how to find them. As Artifacts play a major role in earning a cultural victory in Civ 7, you will likely want to know where to look for them and how to use them properly.
Like Civ 7's other victory conditions, Artifacts aren’t available until Civ 7’s Modern Age. This is because they represent relics from the Exploration and Antiquity Age civilizations of the past. You will need to have the right Civic, a specific unit, and the right buildings to find and house Artifacts. You will also usually need to locate an artifact on the map, though there are some exceptions. This makes them a bit harder to earn than something like Codices that can be earned through developing specific Technology.

What Are Artifacts In Civ 7?
Artifacts Are Great Works That Help You Win A Cultural Victory
Artifacts are a unique type of Great Work in Civ 7 that are essential for earning a cultural victory. Artifacts are tied to advancing the Culture Legacy Path in Civ 7 during the Modern Age. Once you have collected and housed 15 Artifacts in your empire, you will unlock the World’s Fair Wonder, which, when constructed, will win you the game. You can house Artifacts in certain buildings so long as they have an available slot for them, similar to other Great Works.
Aside from finishing the Cultural Legacy Path, you can also earn a few milestone rewards by housing artifacts and fulfilling other requirements like studying the Hegemony Civic. Each milestone will earn you a Cultural Legacy Point and advance the progress of the Modern Age. Artifacts themselves will also offer you a bonus to Culture when they are housed in a building’s dedicated slot, which can also help you work toward a cultural victory. Of course, you’ll need to know how to actually get Artifacts if you want to follow this strategy to win the game.

Artifacts Can Be Found By Explorers
Artifacts can be discovered on Civ 7’s map by the new Explorer unit. Explorers are a Modern Age unit that can be created after researching the Natural History Civic. Once created, an Explorer must visit a University or Museum and research artifacts before they can discover them. When you click on your Explorer, you will see a magnifying glass and vase icon over any tile that has one of the required buildings. Have your Explorer travel there, then select the Research Artifact action on the unit HUD displayed at the bottom right of your screen.
After finishing the research, Explorers will be able to find Exploration Age Artifacts on the map.
The game will give you an indication of what tiles head to to find Ruins housing these Artifacts. Explorers can also do further research to find Civ 7's Antiquity Age Artifacts, which opens a wider range of options for finding Artifacts on the map. You can also earn Artifacts through narrative events if you choose them as your reward when the dialogue box pops up. Though finding Artifacts with Explorers is the most reliable method, it’s good to keep an eye out for these events too.
How To House Artifacts In Civ 7
Artifacts Are Housed In Dedicated Slots Through The Great Works Page
Once you’ve managed to find some Artifacts in Civ 7, you will need to find a way to house them before they start counting toward your Legacy Path progress. Your Palace will have one automatic slot for an Artifact, but you will need plenty more if you want to reach the 15 needed for a cultural victory. Museums have three Artifact slots and also earn you additional Culture, making them an integral part of your strategy for a cultural victory. Russia’s unique Hermitage Wonder is another good option, as it also has three slots and gives a bigger Culture boost.
To house an Artifact in an open slot, click on the View Great Works option at the top of your screen; it is the one that looks like a white vase on a dark blue background. Once the Great Works page is open, you will see empty Artifact slots on the right-hand side of the page, corresponding to your settlements and the buildings within them. Click the empty slot you want to fill, then click the Artifact you want to place there. Do this 15 times, and you are just one step away from earning a Civilization 7 cultural victory.
