Magic the Gathering's Final Fantasy crossover set made $200m in a single day
Jul 30, 2025 am 01:50 AMHasbro's latest Magic the Gathering x Final Fantasy crossover card collection raked in $200 million in just 24 hours, according to CEO Christian Cocks, who shared the news during a recent earnings call. This jaw-dropping one-day performance far surpasses previous crossover milestones—like the Lord of the Rings set, which reportedly took around six months to hit the same revenue mark.
Cocks elaborated: "Lord of the Rings reached $200 million over half a year. Final Fantasy did it in a single day—and we still didn’t meet demand. We simply couldn’t manufacture enough."
He added, "We quadrupled production before launch—four times the initial run. It was up by massive, double-digit percentages compared to any other set we've ever produced. And even then, fans were left wanting more."
While the financial success is undeniable, the Magic the Gathering community remains divided on these branded crossover releases. For many, it's thrilling to see beloved franchises like Final Fantasy or Warhammer woven into the game. The excitement of pulling a legendary character from a favorite universe can be a major draw.
However, some longtime players worry that the focus on external IP collaborations might sideline Magic’s deep, original lore. With crossover sets proving so profitable, there's concern that intricate, years-in-the-making story arcs within Magic’s own multiverse—like the journey to Bloomburrow—could be deprioritized in favor of corporate partnerships.
From a shareholder’s standpoint, the math might seem clear: would you prefer another homegrown storyline, or a mythic rare Captain America card in patriotic colors? Which drives bigger sales?
Still, Hasbro isn't abandoning Magic’s internal universe. The company is actively exploring ways to expand its original IP into new formats, including television and film. There's also interest in future projects like Baldur's Gate 4—though, as Cocks noted, there's no rush to get there just yet.
