ForbesNYT Connections Today: Friday, July 25 Hints And Answers (#775)By Kris Holt
If you’re looking at a particularly challenging Connections puzzle today, this one might stretch your general knowledge further than most. That’s where our hints and answers come in handy.
How to Play Connections
Connections ranks as the second-most popular game in the NYT Games lineup, just behind the classic crossword. It's a completely free, engaging daily puzzle that gives your mind a solid workout. You can play it right here.
The challenge is to sort 16 words into four groups of four, each sharing a common theme. These themes can range from straightforward categories to more abstract wordplay—like compound words or phrases where the same word precedes or follows each entry. The puzzles often get trickier as you progress.
There’s only one correct solution, and you’re limited in how many guesses you can make, so random guessing won’t get you far. The groups are color-coded by difficulty: starting with easier yellow or green, moving to blue, and culminating in the most difficult purple. A correct guess lights up the row and reveals the connection. If you're close but not quite there, the game will tell you that you're one word off. After four incorrect guesses, it’s game over. But if you want to avoid failing, you can either check back here or clear your browser cookies to reset the puzzle. For more puzzles, consider an NYT Games subscription, which unlocks the entire archive. Now, onto the hints and solutions:
What Are Today’s Connections Hints?
Here are the 16 words from today’s puzzle:
- LUXE
- TREK
- BOTTLE
- WARS
- COPE
- ANISE
- SARA
- KELLY
- SAGE
- MARCH
- HUNTER
- MACE
- HIKE
- PEA
- DILL
- TRAMP
The official hints for the groups are:
- Blue Group - From A to B
- Yellow Group - A bit of flavor
- Green Group - A rainbow section
- Purple Group - Half words
What Are Today’s Connections Groups?
Warning: Spoilers ahead. Here’s a deeper look at the actual themes behind today’s groups:
- Blue Group - Travel on Foot
- Yellow Group - Herbs and Spices
- Green Group - Shades of Green
- Purple Group - Starts of European Capitals
What Are Today’s Connections Answers?
Below are the full answers for each group, including all four words in their correct categories. Major spoilers follow, so proceed with caution.
- Blue Group - Travel on Foot: HIKE, MARCH, TRAMP, TREK
- Yellow Group - Herbs and Spices: ANISE, DILL, MACE, SAGE
- Green Group - Shades of Green: BOTTLE, HUNTER, KELLY, PEA
- Purple Group - Starts of European Capitals: COPE, LUXE, SARA, WARS
The Blue Group was fairly intuitive, despite the presence of a potential red herring. Words like TREK and WARS might make you think of “STAR,” but that’s a distraction. In this case, they’re simply part of a synonym chain for walking.
The Yellow Group posed a challenge, especially if you’re not into cooking. While DILL and SAGE are more familiar to most, ANISE and MACE are less common in everyday kitchens, making this group harder to crack for non-chefs.
The Green Group played on color names—specifically, different shades of green. BOTTLE green might not immediately come to mind, but it’s a real paint color. Similarly, HUNTER green, KELLY green, and PEA green are all established variations.
The Purple Group, as usual, was the toughest. It relied on recognizing the first syllables of European capital cities: COPE → Copenhagen, LUXE → Luxembourg, SARA → Sarajevo, and WARS → Warsaw. The country-sharing-capital-name trick with Luxembourg adds an extra layer of difficulty.
Overall, this was a tough Connections puzzle. How did you fare before the hints kicked in?
