Nearly a third of early Switch 2 buyers in the US also bought the $85 Pro Controller, and with my brand new Joy-Con 2 drifting into oblivion I'm tempted to join them
Jul 29, 2025 am 01:27 AMBased on recently released launch data for the Nintendo Switch 2, it seems a significant number of consumers don’t mind shelling out $85 for an additional controller.
New figures from market research company Circana, as reported by Game File, reveal that the new Pro Controller achieved a 32% attach rate with the Switch 2 in the U.S. during its first month on the market. This suggests that nearly one in three Switch 2 purchasers also picked up the Pro Controller—an Xbox-style alternative to the Joy-Con 2s included with the console. Crunching the numbers, with approximately 1.2 million units sold in the U.S. during June, that translates to roughly 512,000 Pro Controllers moving off shelves in the same period.
Right now, as I struggle with my right Joy-Con 2—which appears to have a manufacturing flaw causing it to constantly and rapidly scroll to the right regardless of the app (yes, it’s updated, yes, I’ve tried recalibrating, yes, I’ve rebooted, and yes, I know it’s technically not “drift”), I’m starting to seriously consider ditching my usual frugality and just caving in to buy the Pro Controller. But realistically, I should probably just contact Nintendo Support and get it fixed.
Still, I have to admit—I’m honestly shocked so many people were ready to drop eighty-five whole dollars, in this economic climate, right after purchasing a console that costs over $500, on a peripheral that doesn’t offer much more functionality than what’s already included. No judgment whatsoever—if that’s your thing, more power to you. I just can’t help but wonder… am I the cheap one here?
Nintendo has officially broken a 12-year record previously held by the PS4, making the Switch 2 the "fastest-selling video game hardware device in U.S. history."
