Shiny Raid battles return to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet with the four Treasures of Ruin. First on the menu is Wo-Chien, the Grass-Dark type legendary feared for its bulk and nasty ability. For those who want to make Shiny Wo-Chien theirs, they will have to bring not only their strongest pokemon but a solid strategy.
That strategy begins by understanding Wo-Chien's unique ability, moves, and staggering stats. As a Five-Star Raid battle, only fully-trained Pokemon that use every advantage - from types to items - against Wo-Chien will be able to not only survive but to best the 'Ruinous Pokemon.' And sadly, beating Wo-Chien once won't be enough.

Wo-Chien's moveset is thankfully very limited, and Ruination is always fixed to be in one of the four move slots. Additionally, Ruination can only be used once in a fight and must always be used as the first attack on one random opponent.
The greatest threat in Wo-Chien's arsenal is his Tablets of Ruin. This ability cuts the incoming power of Physical attacks by 25 percent.
Because Wo-Chien's highest stat is Special Defense and his HP is multiplied by 35 percent for this fight, it is a wall-like beast that requires large and steady damage.
Best Pokemon To Defeat Shiny Wo-Chien
Wo-Chien is weak to the following types:
- Fire
- Ice
- Flying
- Bug
- Poison
Although Wo-Chien has an anti-Physical damage ability, Special Attackers don't have much of an advantage due to his high Special Defense and access to Snarl.
Therefore, the best Pokemon are those that can:
- Resist Grass and/or Dark moves (or have high Defensive stats and neutral resistances)
- Combat Wo-Chien's ability or Snarl with a stat-increasing ability, item, or move
- Deal super-effective STAB (Same-Type-Attack-Bonus) damage
These Pokemon can include, but are certainly not limited to:
Pokemon |
Special Notes |
---|---|
Galarian Zapdos |
Resists Dark and Grass. Defiant increases Physical Attack after Snarl. STAB Drill Peck and Brave Bird deal great damage. |
Iron Moth |
Highly resists Grass. Fiery Dance snowballs Special Attack higher each early turn, combating Snarl debuffs. Bug Buzz and Sludge Wave are additional damage options, giving a range of options for Tera Types. |
Ogerpon (Hearthflame) |
Best used with Sunny Day and Ivory Cudgel. Swords Dance can be used to get around Wo-Chien's ability. Resists Grass. |
Empoleon |
Has high defenses, making it an excellent tank. Best performs as a Tera Ice with the Competitive ability. This makes the most of Snarl's supposed debuff while opening the door for savage Ice Beams. |
Scizor |
Highly resists grass while using Swords Dance and a physical bug move (like Bug Bite or Fury Cutter with the Technician ability) deals great damage. |
Emboar/Infernape |
Resists both Grass and Dark moves. Infernape may be marginally better for Special Attack flexibility and higher Speed. |
Heatran |
Highly resists Grass. As a Special Attacker, gets around Wo-Chien's ability but may struggle with Snarl debuffs. |
Sneasler/Toxicroak |
Resists Grass and Dark. Hidden ability Poison Touch is very useful. Swords Dance into STAB Poison Jab is reliable. |
Wo-Chien will begin every fight with his ability (lower all incoming Physical attacks by 25 percent) and the Ruination move. Ruination will lower one party member's HP by half.
Once these two debuffs are in place, you will be able to select your moves.
If you have a pokemon that will struggle against Wo-Chien if you are picked for Ruination, you may want to place an item to help counter it (such as a Sitrus Berry) or plan to use the Heal Up Cheer on Round Two or Three - if no Pokemon on the team can use moves such as Life Dew, that is.
The best opening moves are typically:
- A single two-stage stat increase (Swords Dance, Tail Glow, Nasty Plot, etc.)
- A Power-Up Cheer
- A super-effective move that possibly inflicts a status condition
- A strong, super-effective STAB move (that does not lower your stats)
During the first phase, your goal is to build up your meter toward Terastallization. With repeated uses, you should be able to Terastallize around the third or fourth round.
Once Terastallized, use your Terastallized power to deal more damage to Wo-Chien. Do not waste turns on stat bonuses at this point unless you're using a Cheer function for the whole team.
The greatest hurdle is in destroying Wo-Chien's shield. Once this is accomplished, Wo-Chien will suffer 30 percent of its HP in damage and remove:
- The effects of all Abilities on your team
- All Stat bonuses on your team
- Negative effects on itself
Wo-Chien's Giga Drain can make a serious hurdle if any teammate has either a weakness to Grass or has a low Special Defense. If either is true, the fight may become impossible to clear as Wo-Chien can heal his shield and stall for time.
The final step to defeating Wo-Chien is the final push after the shield is broken. After all the effects above are removed, Wo-Chien will become more aggressive.
Sometimes, Wo-Chien will attack certain party members two times in the same turn. Because of this, if your time limit is near complete, it might be wise to have one member using the Heal Up Cheer to stall.
Otherwise, if you are comfortable, attack with your strongest super-effective moves to end the fight before Wo-Chien can end you.
