Questions are now swirling around a potential season 2 of The Hunting Wives, though Netflix hasn’t officially confirmed anything—nor have they declared it canceled. That silence, at least, leaves the door open, and signs are pointing toward a positive outcome.
Rebecca Cutter, the show’s creator and showrunner, recently spoke with Variety and shared some early thoughts on what a second season could explore:
“I’d consider a time jump—not a full year, but enough to shift the dynamics,” Cutter revealed. “By the end of filming season 1, it became clear the show runs on two core forces: the mystery element and the complex bond between Margo and Sophie. The real drama lies in how those two threads collide and evolve.”
She continued, “My first question for season 2 is, where do these women stand when we pick back up? Where do they end? How do their personal power levels rise and fall, both individually and in relation to each other? Once I map that emotional arc, then we can build the new crime around it.”
As for the mystery itself, Cutter believes introducing a fresh murder would be a smart move. “Absolutely,” she said. “But I’ll be honest—I don’t know who did it… or even who the victim is yet!”
This means no anthology reboot—season 2 would continue with the same core cast and ongoing character journeys, even with a new central crime. One challenge is that the first season was based on a single novel by May Cobb. Any continuation would need original material. However, Cobb has been deeply involved in the series from the start, collaborating closely with the writers. If she’s open to expanding the story beyond her book, that could pave the way forward. The fact that The Hunting Wives wasn’t marketed as a limited series suggests the team always intended to continue.
Looking at Netflix’s renewal formula, several factors are in the show’s favor:
- Viewership – It’s performing strongly on the Top 10 list, climbing over time. While it hasn’t claimed the #1 spot, its steady growth signals solid audience engagement.
- Cost – The production isn’t burdened with expensive VFX or A-list movie stars. Though Brittany Snow and Malin Akerman bring recognizable faces (Snow from Pitch Perfect, Akerman from various hits), the budget remains manageable.
- Reviews – Critical reception is respectable, sitting at a 75% on Rotten Tomatoes. Oddly, there’s no audience score yet, despite clear evidence of widespread viewership.
- Completion Rate – This is one of Netflix’s most guarded but crucial metrics. Murder mysteries typically excel here, as viewers are driven to finish the season to uncover the truth—giving The Hunting Wives a natural edge.
All signs point to a renewal being highly likely. The bigger question isn’t if—but what kind of season 2 they’ll deliver. The challenge now lies in crafting a compelling new chapter that honors the foundation while raising the stakes.
