Google One AI Lite: A More Affordable AI Experience for All?
According to a recent Android Authority APK Teardown report, app researcher AssembleDebug has discovered hidden text in Google’s app code that hints at upcoming changes to its subscription model.
The code mentions features such as “Deep Research” and access to the advanced Gemini 2.5 Pro model, tied to a new option labeled “ROBIN_G1_UPGRADE_LITE_FREEMIUM.” Notably, “Robin” is believed to be Google’s internal codename for Gemini.
These findings point to a potential new offering that could provide broader access to powerful tools like Deep Research and the Gemini 2.5 Pro AI model at a reduced cost—possibly positioning Google to compete more aggressively with ChatGPT on price.
At present, users without a paid plan can only use Deep Research “a few times a month,” and have minimal access to Google’s flagship Gemini 2.5 Pro AI.
In contrast, Google One AI Pro subscribers enjoy much higher usage caps and enhanced features, including Gemini models with larger context windows capable of processing more complex inputs.
This potential shift may also aim to retain users who are nearing the end of free 12-month Google One AI Pro subscriptions included with devices like the Pixel 9 Pro or Chromebook Plus.
Since this feature hasn’t been officially announced, exact pricing and included features remain unclear. There’s also a possibility that Google might reduce certain non-AI benefits—such as offering less than the current 2TB of cloud storage that comes with Google One AI Pro.
This strategy would align with Google’s earlier launch of the budget-focused “Google One Lite” plan, introduced last year. That tier offers affordable Google One subscriptions tailored to specific markets, starting in India and later expanding to Brazil, Mexico, and Indonesia. Google One Lite provides 30GB of cloud storage—less than the 100GB in Google One Basic—but at a price point under half the cost.
Therefore, if launched, the Google One AI Lite plan might follow a similar regional rollout approach, initially targeting select countries.
