You might encounter monarchs in the most unexpected locations. In Path of Exile 2, as you venture into Freythron, you'll come across cultists conducting horrifying, forbidden rituals. Engaging them is optional, but defeating them grants useful loot to strengthen your character.

Interacting with the final Ritual Altar triggers a powerful event—it spawns numerous enemy units and summons the fearsome King in the Mists. This boss battle unfolds in two distinct phases, challenging your reflexes and awareness as you alternate between constant motion and absolute stillness to survive deadly mechanics.

Boss Skills Phase 1

• Spin Projectiles: The King’s signature move. As he advances, he spins continuously, launching small bladed projectiles in all directions.
• Frontal Attack: When he shouts “Throwngrip!” or “Lonnsaigh!”, prepare for a vine-based frontal assault aimed directly at you.
• AOE Attack: Upon saying “Sprout” or “Fas!”, the King performs a wide area-of-effect strike around his body. He flashes red before executing, giving you a visual warning to back away quickly.
• Ritual Effigy: He marks a target with a death sigil, placing a ritual effigy on the ground. You must destroy it immediately, or suffer instant death.
• Blood Puddle: During the fight, pools of blood appear across the battlefield. Stepping into one causes rapid HP loss, so avoid them at all costs.
• Keep Running: A debuff is applied with a subtle lightning effect hovering above your head. Though hard to spot, his voice line—“Keep running”—is a clear command: do not stop moving. Failure to comply results in being frozen and left vulnerable to attacks.

Boss Skills Phase 2

• Stop Moving: Countering the previous mechanic, the King yells “You are seen!” and casts a red aura on you. This stillness debuff requires you to halt all movement—though using skills is permitted. Ignoring it causes freezing and a 5-second debuff that increases damage taken. A red circle around you signals this effect.
• Purple Ball of Death: The King appears to writhe in agony, then opens his chest to fire a massive purple orb toward you. It travels straight to your position and detonates in a huge explosion—dodge sideways the moment you see it.
• Explosive Mines: He drops pulsing purple mines across the arena. These must be avoided, as triggering one deals catastrophic damage.

Strategy

Phase one is relatively manageable: destroy the Ritual Effigy when it appears, dodge the red AOE by watching for the glow, and keep moving when you hear “Keep running.” The real challenge begins in phase two.

Upon reaching low health, the King transforms into a larger, more menacing form and fully heals. The battlefield becomes cluttered with blood pools and explosive mines, making positioning crucial. At the same time, the “Stop Moving” debuff forces you to freeze in place despite the hazardous surroundings—timing your stillness is key to avoiding devastating penalties.

Additionally, watch for the King’s pained animation indicating the Purple Orb launch. The moment he begins, start strafing laterally to evade the projectile, which homes in on your location before exploding in a wide radius.
