ForbesNYT Connections Today: Thursday, July 17 Hints And Answers (#767)By Kris Holt

Hi there, Connectors! The weekend is just around the corner, and I hope you enjoy it however suits you best :).

I'm a big fan of The Chase, a quiz show that's been airing in the U.K. for many years. It’s an entertaining format, and I enjoy participating along with it (naturally, I’d perform way better than most of the contestants on the show).

A recent episode featured a retired police officer. When questioned about his reasons for joining the force, he shared that he used to be a young anarchist and had interactions with the police. His wife bet him £50 that he couldn’t become a cop. He felt compelled to prove her wrong. He mentioned that he actually ended up liking the job. Still, that seems like a relatively small amount (especially considering the salary of a police officer) to compromise one’s beliefs.

Before we dive in, I want to mention that we have a wonderful little community on Discord where we discuss NYT Connections, other NYT games, and various other topics. Everyone who has joined has been great. It’s a pleasant place to hang out, and you're more than welcome to join us.

Discord is also the best channel to provide me with feedback regarding the column, especially when I occasionally make mistakes (whether rare or not). I don’t check comments or Twitter frequently. You can also read my weekend editions of this column in my new newsletter, Pastimes.*

Today’s NYT Connections hints and answers for Friday, July 18 are just ahead.

How To Play Connections

Connections is a popular free daily word game from the New York Times. Each day, a new puzzle becomes available at midnight. You can play via the NYT’s website or Games app.

You’re given a grid of 16 words. Your goal is to organize them into four groups of four by identifying the connections between them. The groups could be categories like things you can click, names for participants in research studies, or words that follow a specific body part.

Each puzzle has only one solution, so you’ll need to be cautious with words that might belong in multiple categories. You can reshuffle the words to help spot possible connections.

Each group is color-coded. The yellow group is typically the easiest to figure out, followed by blue and green in the middle difficulty, and the purple group is usually the hardest. The purple group often involves some wordplay.

Select four words you believe go together and press Submit. If you guess incorrectly, you’ll lose a life. If you’re close to a correct group, you might see a message indicating you’re just one word away, but you’ll still need to determine which word to swap.

If you make four mistakes, it’s game over. Let’s avoid that by using some hints, and if you’re really stuck, today’s Connections answers. Like Wordle and other similar games, it’s easy to share your results with friends on social media or group chats.

If you have an NYT All Access or Games subscription, you can access the publication’s Connections archive. This includes every previous Connections puzzle, so you can go back and play any that you’ve missed.

Aside from the first 60 puzzles or so, you should be able to find our hints by searching on Google if you need them! Just click here and include the date of the puzzle you’re looking for in the search query.

What Are Today’s Connections Hints?

Scroll carefully! Just after the hints for each of today’s Connections groups, I’ll reveal what the groups are without immediately telling you which words belong in them.

Today’s 16 words are...

  • SEE
  • SPOT
  • RUN
  • CATCH
  • COBRA
  • SLIDE
  • GUITAR
  • STRING
  • BLANKET
  • BRIDGE
  • EEL
  • COW
  • STREAK
  • NOTE
  • WHEEL
  • SERIES

And the hints for today’s Connections groups are:

  • ? Yellow group — one after another
  • ? Green group — you won't necessarily need to enter witness protection after doing this
  • ? Blue group — these might not strengthen your convictions, but they'll likely build stronger muscles around your spine
  • ? Purple group — blue, sheep and pen would fit in here

One Word For Each Connections Group

Need some extra assistance?

Warning: we’re entering spoiler territory now.

Let’s look at one word for each group.

Today’s Connections word hints are…

  • ? Yellow group — RUN
  • ? Green group — CATCH
  • ? Blue group — WHEEL
  • ? Purple group — SLIDE

What Are Today’s Connections Groups?

Today’s Connections groups are...

  • ? Yellow group — sequence
  • ? Green group — pick up on
  • ? Blue group — yoga backbends
  • ? Purple group — electric _____

What Are Today’s Connections Answers?

Spoiler alert! Don’t scroll any further until you’re ready to discover today’s Connections answers.

This is your final warning!

Today’s Connections answers are...

  • ? Yellow group — sequence (RUN, SERIES, STREAK, STRING)
  • ? Green group — pick up on (CATCH, NOTE, SEE, SPOT)
  • ? Blue group — yoga backbends (BRIDGE, COBRA, COW, WHEEL)
  • ? Purple group — electric _____ (BLANKET, EEL, GUITAR, SLIDE)

The See Spot Run reference in the top line was clever. I liked that. But not for long, because we’ve got some serious solving to do.

Switching NOTE for RUN on the top line and grouping those words together gave me the greens. Straightforward enough! Seeing STREAK and RUN next to each other made the yellows clear afterward.

It took me a bit longer to figure out the next step, but GUITAR kept catching my attention. EEL seemed a little odd, and after a few moments of thinking, I had that satisfying "aha!" moment. They’re both electric things! So are BLANKET and SLIDE (a type of dance).

That left me with the blues. I wasn’t sure at all about those, though in hindsight I recognized BRIDGE and COW as yoga poses. So I was okay with figuring them out automatically.

I'm happy to have another win under my belt, and with a perfect game too. That brings my win streak up to 143 wins. Here's my grid for today:
