'Untamed' Review: Netflix's Best New Show Is A Murder Mystery With A Killer Setting
Jul 26, 2025 am 01:50 AMThis scene alone is enough to make me frightened. I was afraid of heights and could never understand the appeal of climbing along the cliff and only abyss under my feet. Of course, this time is not an ordinary climb. Just as they were struggling up, a young woman suddenly fell and was stopped by a rope, almost dragging the other two climbers down - extremely thrilling. The following contains slight spoilers.
The seemingly suicide incident was soon revealed to a darker truth, and the investigation began, led by taciturn Investigation Services (ISB) agent Kyle Turner (Eric Barner). Turner is a person who cherishes his words and is a typical tough guy-like lone wolf. He prefers riding horses than trucks and trusts animals more than humans. But he has the best ability to solve cases, and he is easy to interrogate the suspect or travel through the steep mountains and forests.
He is partnered with National Park new ranger Naya Vasquez (Lily San Diego), who just resigned from the Los Angeles Police Force and fled a bad relationship with her young son to start a new life. Vasquez has little experience, but he learns very quickly. Turner doesn't like to work with others, but unfortunately he has no choice this time - Park chief ranger Paul Sant (Sam Neal) personally arranged this partner.
As the investigation deepened, the two embarked on an increasingly dark road: first confirm the identity of the deceased, and then find out whether human factors were involved. As expected, while revealing the truth about the woman's death, more unsettling secrets emerge—including illegal activities in the park and the painful past of Turner: his son and his ex-wife Jill (Rosemary DeWitt) died a few years ago.
This drama reminds me of works like "Murder", but it only took six episodes to tell the complete story, unlike the former case that was delayed to a full 26 episodes. From this perspective, "Wilderness" does not have much new ideas. If "Murder" and "The Wind Valley" directed by Taylor Sheridan (extremely outstanding) gave birth to a child, it was probably the show.
The biggest highlight of this show is the two protagonists: Eric Barna and Yosemite National Park itself. Perhaps the title of the drama is better just called "Yosemite", after all, it is almost one of the protagonists. Although the main filming site is British Columbia, Canada, the picture is still breathtakingly beautiful - dense forests and towering mountains, this vast wilderness hides the darkest secrets of human nature.
And Barna's performance reminds people of Pedro Pascal, especially his performance in "The Last of Us". Just like Joel, Turner is also a man who loses himself after losing his child, numbing pain with alcohol, being alone and working. I once fantasized about Pascal coming to play this role, but now it seems that Barna is more suitable. Both of them have good acting skills, but Pascal has made too many appointments in recent years, and this time Barna accurately interprets a complex character with a rough appearance but an emotional tension inside.
But it does offer a compact six-episode charming puzzle with distinct characters that resonate easily (whether it is support or disgusting), and there are nice twists to keep you interested. This is not an action-intensive drama, but more of a digging step by step with the clues. Although there are not many tense moments and there are several decent gun battles, I appreciate this.
Is it subversive enough? Not enough at all. Too predictable? It's a bit indeed. But it is still a relaxed and beautiful work, with solid reasoning and moving emotions, making you care about the fate of the protagonist. I personally think so. Yes, it's not as good as "True Detective", "East Nightmare" or "Happy Valley", but as a well-tempo and unscheduled series, it's worth a try.
PS: It’s interesting that Turner, as an ISB agent, always reminds me of another group of “ISB agents”—yes, these Imperial Security Bureau elites who are dedicated to maintaining the order of the galaxy:
