Teachers Get A New Assistant: Instructure Drops AI Into Canvas

How AI Is Enhancing the Canvas Experience

At the heart of the IgniteAI launch is an upgraded assignment creator that enables educators to design AI-supported learning tasks. Instructors can input learning objectives, draft sample prompts, configure how the AI assistant interacts with students, and establish assessment criteria. Simultaneously, core Canvas functionalities—grading, analytics, and content development—are being enhanced with AI automation, including accelerated feedback delivery and AI-created rubrics.

Educators retain complete control over AI behavior. They can fine-tune prompts and examine every AI-generated response before it reaches students. On the student side, learners can engage in targeted, self-paced dialogues with the AI directly within Canvas. All conversations are visible to instructors, and Instructure emphasizes that student data remains within the institution and is not shared with OpenAI.

The platform also logs student-AI interactions. Key moments—such as when a learner demonstrates understanding or makes progress—are recorded and can be reflected in the Gradebook. This gives teachers insight not only into final submissions but also into the learning process itself. Routine tasks like revising rubrics, answering repetitive questions, and writing feedback are automated, freeing up instructors to focus on mentoring, classroom discussions, and higher-level teaching strategies.

“We’re dedicated to building next-generation learning management systems within an open ecosystem that empowers both educators and learners to adapt and succeed in a fast-evolving world,” said Steve Daly, CEO of Instructure. “Our collaboration with OpenAI reflects our bold vision: to create an education ecosystem ready for the future, where meaningful learning and achievement are supported at every level.”

Potential Benefits and Challenges

According to Daly, this integration aims to save educators time and offer students a more adaptable way to interact with course content. Leah Belsky, OpenAI’s lead for education strategy, views the tools as a means to deliver “more personalized and interconnected learning experiences,” while preserving essential human guidance.

Adoption in schools is accelerating. Recent surveys indicate that education outpaces all other sectors in the use of generative AI. Early results from pilot programs show students gaining confidence through private AI conversations, and some classroom studies report slight improvements in test performance among students using AI for practice.

However, concerns remain. Nearly 50% of faculty in recent surveys express concern about bias in AI-generated content, and a comparable number highlight data privacy as a major issue. Academic integrity officers anticipate new forms of cheating, while others caution that costly AI subscriptions could widen the gap between well-resourced and underfunded institutions. Without proper training, inconsistent usage and mixed outcomes are expected.

A May 2025 university survey reinforced these worries among students, who ranked concerns about fair grading, misuse of AI to bypass work, and overdependence on automated suggestions as top issues. Faculty shared similar views, questioning whether AI might push weaker writers toward formulaic language or whether automated evaluation could weaken student-teacher trust.

To address these risks, institutions are forming review committees, implementing bias audits, and offering clear opt-out mechanisms. Instructure maintains that all student data is kept within the school’s environment and that OpenAI does not have access to individual user information. Institutional privacy teams are expected to closely oversee compliance.

The Road Ahead

AI is now being integrated directly into the spaces where teaching occurs—assignments, discussions, and grading workflows. The AI assistant becomes an embedded part of the learning experience, not just an external tool. If successful, these systems could provide teachers with deeper insights into student thinking and help learners move past surface-level responses toward more reflective, process-driven work.

If the technology falls short, however, confidence may diminish. Regardless, AI is no longer a peripheral presence in education. It’s now inside the classroom—logged in, active, and evolving alongside students and teachers.
