Google's Next Move: Android Boosts ChromeOS. Both Get Stronger.

Jul 19, 2025 am 11:13 AM

Google set off a wave of speculation recently when Sameer Samat, President of the Android ecosystem, mentioned to Tech Radar that the company is planning to “merge ChromeOS and Android into a single platform.” This comment quickly sparked discussions around the future of Chromebooks and Android devices.

Could this indicate the end of ChromeOS as we currently know it? And how would the Education sector, which depends on ChromeOS for its simplicity, multi-user functionality, and built-in security, cope with a full Android environment that has slower updates and a touch-first app design?

Android and ChromeOS Won’t Fully Combine --------------------------------------------

In reality, don’t expect any major changes to either OS in the short term. Samat later clarified his remarks in a tweet, saying:

“Excited to see so much interest! To clarify our 2024 blog post: we're enhancing the ChromeOS experience by leveraging Android’s underlying tech to boost performance, speed up development, and better connect your laptop and phone. I'm really looking forward to it!” — Sameer Samat, President, Android Ecosystem.

As outlined in the blog post, ChromeOS will continue to develop independently but will increasingly depend on Android’s foundational technology. This move is expected to create a more integrated code base, easing the burden on developers and improving access to AI capabilities like Gemini.

Most importantly, Google has confirmed it will keep offering the “unmatched security, consistent design, and strong management tools that ChromeOS users, companies, and schools rely on.” If Samat’s goal was simply to reinforce these commitments instead of announcing a full unification of the two systems, we can be assured ChromeOS is here to stay, albeit with a stronger Android foundation going forward.

What Does Android Code Mean For Affordable Chromebooks?

Still, this shift raises key questions about how Chromebooks will manage an increased reliance on Android. While Google promises “new levels of performance” thanks to the updated code base, budget Chromebooks—those priced at $250 or less—typically have much weaker hardware specs than what’s needed for a smooth Android experience. It’s common to find ChromeOS devices with just 4GB RAM and 32GB storage, specs that would struggle to handle Android apps efficiently. It remains to be seen how Google’s strategy will affect hardware needs and device pricing moving forward.

Android Meets ChromeOS: Mutual Benefits For Both

Of course, there’s potential for ChromeOS to offer benefits back to Android. For example, Android’s growing desktop mode delivers a large-screen experience for phones connected to displays, but it’s nowhere near as refined as ChromeOS’s desktop environment. A shared code base could accelerate development and improve how phones and laptops interact.

A unified code structure could also bring new features to both platforms. Android apps could run natively on ChromeOS, removing the need for a virtual machine layer and boosting performance and compatibility. Since ChromeOS already supports multiple users per device, bringing this feature to Android could make smartphones and tablets more versatile.

ChromeOS also allows for running Linux apps and even Steam games. Early signs of Linux support are already visible in Android through the new Terminal app. With Linux support being a major part of ChromeOS, it’s safe to assume this feature will continue evolving, opening up new possibilities for Android.

While upcoming updates to Android and ChromeOS may not be as drastic as some believe, they are still set to bring meaningful improvements that benefit users across both platforms. Would you be interested in a Chromebook powered by Android?
