Basics of Mentor Badge
Learn about Scoutmaster
Survival Scoutmaster
Although it is indeed a tough game, the overall tone of PEAK is usually relatively relaxed. This makes the mysterious Scoutmaster and its terrifying creatures even more surprising. If you want to encounter something truly terrible, then the mentor badge is right for you.
This guide will discuss how to get the mentor badge, and the mechanism behind your encounter with Scoutmaster, and will also provide some advice to make the process of getting the badge safer.
At the time of writing, there seems to be some related bugs in this badge discussed. The relevant content will be explained in the points mentioned, but these bugs may be fixed in the future.
Basics of Mentor Badge
The requirement for the mentor badge is "a one-to-one meeting with Scoutmaster", a description that hints at its acquisition conditions, but may still cause some confusion, especially since the badge appears to have some hidden conditions or bugs, which will be discussed later in this section.
To understand this badge, you first need to know that there is a rarely seen enemy in PEAK called Scoutmaster. He is a slender limbs, animal-faced skeleton, wearing a Scoutmaster uniform. This creature appears to be the final form of Scoutmaster Myres, and you can find his diary pages near the game's bonfire (if they haven't been generated due to bugs). Scoutmaster is very dangerous and can’t be killed, but if you can hold on for long enough he will eventually leave. Importantly, Scoutmaster is usually targeted only one climber, and that climber has moderate static interference in his vision, prompting that something terrible is approaching him.
This badge is obtained through encounters with Scoutmaster. Some data claims that you have to survive the encounter, but according to the test, this doesn't seem to be correct. Strangely, at the time of writing, it seems very unusual that only the host player on the server can get this badge, which is likely not intentional, especially if the host player can get the badge even if he is not targeting the host player. If he appears and targets any climber, it looks like the console player will get the badge (if not already) while the other players won't.
After understanding the above information, it is actually not difficult to get this badge (even if you don't use multiple mods to make the game easier overall), although if the target player can't dodge Scoutmaster, he may easily kill one or even multiple climbers (if others get too close). You basically just need to know how to summon him steadily and then make sure you are the host of the server.
Once you get this badge, you will get a pair of eyes that are similar to Scoutmaster, and if you play on Steam, you will also get an achievement.
Learn about Scoutmaster
Scoutmaster is relatively easy, especially in multiplayer games. He can appear in one of two ways:
- Use Scoutmaster's horn magic props, which will give all climbers a morale bonus and cause Scoutmaster to target players who blow the horn.
- Too far from other living climbers, he seems to target the top climbers, according to the test. It is said that this situation will not happen under Tenderfoot difficulty.
Once his summoning conditions are met, a static filter will appear in the target climber's field of view, causing his vision to be slightly blurred. Scoutmaster will spawn farther, usually in places where no one can see it, and then begins to climb towards his target. He was very persistent, unable to be killed, and he made a loud click when approaching. He is almost completely immune to all forms of forced displacement and slowing. Unlike the player, he seems to have no physical limitations and will keep climbing as long as it needs to get close to the target in a straight line. Importantly, he was unable to climb ropes, vines and similar interactive objects.
Once in melee range, Scoutmaster will grab his target and throw it down the mountain with great force, usually causing a lot of fall damage and leaving the target unconscious. He could likewise catch other climbers who were too close, although he did not take the initiative to target them.
Depending on how he summons, his behavior will also be different, which determines when he will leave:
Scoutmaster's horn
If summoned by Scoutmaster's horn, Scoutmaster will have a time limit. His target must survive for about two minutes before he will leave. Otherwise, he will only start leaving after his target is in a coma. If the target is resurrected during his departure, he will immediately target the target again. So make sure not to revive his once attacked teammates until he completely disappears.
Abandon your companions
If summoned for being away from other climbers, Scoutmaster has no time limit. Instead, he seems to focus on how far you are from other climbers. As long as you still maintain a long distance from other living climbers, he will continue to pursue his target. He will only leave if the target no longer stays far enough from the living climber, or if the target is unconscious. Unlike using a horn, when the target is resurrected, Scoutmaster does not seem to attack the target again immediately during the departure, but continues to leave.
Scoutmaster seems to have a cooldown period after leaving, during which time he will not appear again immediately even if the summoning conditions are met. However, using the horn during the cooling period will still lead to him eventually appearing, except that he will wait until the end of the cooling period to generate again.
Survival Scoutmaster
Once it appears, Scoutmaster is a huge threat. He can climb faster than the player and has stronger overall mobility. He seemed to start with normal speeds (although relatively still relatively fast), then gradually accelerated, and eventually became very fast and difficult to deal with. However, he also has several significant weaknesses:
- If you can lead him below you, like standing on a prominent cliff or some curved tree (as shown in this section), he will not be able to do a good job of path searching. In the test, he just ran around directly below you, although there are theoretical paths nearby to climb to where you are.
- Using Pitons allows you to stay safely on any prominent cliff while he runs around below. In edible cascading mushrooms can make it easier for you to do this, but they are harder to find.
- When he hasn't reached his top speed yet, the sprint jumps are faster than Scoutmaster's ground speed.
- He can't climb ropes, vines and chains, but you can.
- If summoned for abandoning other climbers, just get close to your teammates, or let them die strategically (removed from the Scoutmaster pool of teammates checking you to get close to) and he will quickly meet his departure conditions.
Based on the above points, do not try to keep too far from Scoutmaster. If you run too far, he may teleport directly to you.
A slightly sad fact is that Scoutmaster Myres emphasizes not to abandon your mountaineering companions in his survival manual (you can find it early in the game). It seems that even though he became an immortal Scoutmaster, he still carries this belief, and seems to specifically chase and kill climbers who abandoned his friends instead of killing people at will.
