How to Get the Mycology Badge in PEAK

  • Tips for Earning the Badge

A relatively simple badge to obtain in PEAK is the Mycology Badge, which requires eating four different edible mushrooms in one run. The main challenges here are distinguishing poisonous mushrooms from safe ones and locating all four types before reaching the midpoint of the game.

This guide will explain the fundamentals of this badge, how to tell safe mushrooms from dangerous ones, and offer some strategies to help you complete the challenge.

Mycology Badge

How to Get the Mycology Badge in PEAK

In PEAK, the Mycology Badge is obtained by consuming four distinct edible mushrooms. At the moment, the game features only four mushroom varieties (each with two variants, one edible and one poisonous) that can be eaten—meaning you must collect and eat one of each edible type.

According to current data, only around 2.6% of players on Steam have unlocked this badge, making it a rare achievement. While it may seem difficult, the strategies outlined later in this guide will show that it's quite manageable.

After earning the badge, you unlock a mushroom-themed hat for your character and, on Steam, the corresponding Mycology Badge achievement.

Note that PEAK also includes two other fungi—the Shelf Mushroom and the Remedy Fungus—which are not edible and do not count toward this badge.

The Mushrooms of PEAK

How to Get the Mycology Badge in PEAK

There are four edible mushroom types in PEAK, each with two variations—one safe to eat, and one toxic. The exception is the Chubby Mushroom, which is always safe.

Some players have mentioned encountering a "Weird Shroom," but it's either been removed or is extremely rare, with little evidence of its current existence.

Here's how to identify each mushroom and distinguish the edible from the poisonous version:

  • Chubby Mushrooms
    • Plump and round, these are always edible.
  • Button Mushrooms
    • The classic mushroom shape. The edible version has an "X" mark on the cap.
    • Poisonous ones lack the "X" and often have a more spotted appearance with darker patches.
  • Cluster Mushrooms
    • Found in groups of five. The edible type has no skirt around the stem.
    • Poisonous versions have a visible ring or skirt located about a third of the way up each stem.
  • Bugle Mushrooms
    • The most difficult to identify. Focus on the stem: edible ones are smooth and gradually widen toward the top.
    • Poisonous Bugle Mushrooms have ridges or frills on the stem and widen more abruptly near the top, similar to a cupcake wrapper folded at an angle.

Testing shows that both edible and poisonous mushrooms only appear in the Shore and Tropics biomes.

Eating a poisonous mushroom won't stop you from earning the badge, but it also won't count toward it. Additionally, it may lead to poisoning and even death. It's unclear whether being fed a mushroom by another player counts toward the badge. In one test, feeding a mushroom to someone trying to earn the badge appeared to prevent its completion. To be safe, it's best to eat the mushrooms yourself.

Poisonous mushrooms do provide some hunger value before causing damage. However, poison fades over time or can be treated with certain items. Still, they don’t contribute to earning the Mycology Badge.

Tips for Earning the Badge

How to Get the Mycology Badge in PEAK

Earning the Mycology Badge is much easier when playing with a team. If your main goal is the badge rather than reaching the Peak, it becomes far more achievable. Make your intentions known early and ensure all players can identify the mushrooms correctly.

Mushroom locations tend to be consistent per game seed, though they don’t always spawn in every run. If you’ve seen a mushroom in a location before, keep checking it in future runs, especially if you're still trying to earn the badge.

Mushrooms appear in the Shore and Tropics biomes, often in the mountainous areas. Shore is easier to navigate, but you may not find all four mushrooms there. Keep track of where mushrooms are found—even the poisonous ones—so you can revisit those spots in future attempts.

Cooperation is key. When someone finds an edible mushroom, alert the team and, if possible, share extras. You can also designate one player to focus on the badge, with others helping them collect the mushrooms. Since mushrooms often appear in clusters, multiple players can potentially earn the badge in a single run.

If you make collecting the Mycology Badge your main objective and have a few friends to help, it's not a matter of luck alone. While it's not 100% guaranteed, it's far more achievable than the current 2.6% Steam unlock rate suggests. The low rate may be due to:

  • Many players purchasing the game casually or only trying it briefly during its initial popularity spike.
  • The badge not being tied to the main objective of reaching the Peak, so players attempt it passively, which isn't an efficient approach.
