By default, this is set to motion control, and you have to rock Lou gently to get them to relax. Shake the controller too violently and Lou won't only not feel better, you can potentially put them in a worse mood. If the motion controls feel a bit too temperamental for your tastes, you can swap it to be performed by the left stick instead for good old-fashioned analog control.

While far from the ideal way to calm Lou, there is another way to get them to calm down, or at least be quite a bit happier. Lou, speed demon that they are, just loves going fast. So if you find yourself a tri-cruiser, hop in and kick the speed boost on. Lou will start laughing, delighted at the breakneck speed, and will even give you some likes as a reward.

Finally, returning to your private room will set Lou back to a neutral state. This is nice if they've become too far gone to recover, but don't rely on it. Be a good dad and give them some personal attention. It's much more effective.

What Happens If Lou Gets Upset?

However, Lou can get upset, and it can be somewhat catastrophic. BBs were designed to be able to detect BTs, and Lou still serves that purpose for Sam. If Lou is in a happy or neutral state, he will happily and easily detect BTs, making the Odradek more precise and making BTs appear more clearly.

Lou also has multiple stages of being upset. If they start crying, you will still be able to detect BTs, though the loud crying is likely to attract their attention, and that of human enemies if they're within earshot. Visually, BB may turn into a shadowy form when their mood is lowered. If they reach the lowest mood level, they will disappear entirely, with the BB in the pod replaced with a mass of tentacles instead. At this point, the BB functions shut down entirely, with only Sam's natural ability left to see BTs.

Lou gets upset in a few different ways. Being shot at or hit by human enemies, falling and dropping your cargo, and being close to BTs for too long. You should, of course, always try to calm Lou, but it is most critical when around BTs. Not being able to see them can be incredibly dangerous, and the crying is likely to catch their attention.

At this point, the best you can do is attempt to distance yourself from any enemies and try calm Lou. However, it can be hard to bring Lou back from the lowest mood level by soothing them.
