But now, rumors about who Amazon is reportedly looking at to portray James Bond himself are… largely unimpressive, to be honest.

The direction appears to be moving away from Daniel Craig’s iteration of Bond, who has been in the role for over 15 years and is now in his 50s, and instead going for someone much younger—noticeably younger than the franchise has ever gone before. According to Variety, three actors under the age of thirty are currently shortlisted. They include:

Jacob Elordi (age 28) – The Euphoria actor who has recently taken on more mature roles like Saltburn, Wuthering Heights, The Narrow Road to the Deep North, and Frankenstein. He’s Australian, but that doesn’t seem to be a barrier.

Harris Dickinson (age 29) – A steadily rising talent in recent years with standout performances in Where the Crawdads Sing, The Iron Claw, and the controversial Babygirl. If I had to choose one name from this list, it would probably be him—and definitely not the next guy.

Tom Holland (age 29) – The last eligible candidate under 30, and arguably the most famous: Tom Holland. I have no complaints about Holland, who has played MCU Spider-Man for nearly ten years and will soon star in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. It's an impressive résumé, but the thought of him stepping into Bond’s shoes feels completely off-base. Sorry, but it just doesn't fit.

I don’t mean to personally criticize any of these actors, but I’m really not sold on the idea of casting such a young Bond when there are plenty of older actors who seem far more suited to the role. Idris Elba, Henry Cavill, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Theo James, Taron Egerton, Richard Madden, Robert Pattinson, Aaron Pierre—the list goes on and on.

One silver lining, though, is that whoever gets the role will be working with Denis Villeneuve, whom I believe could make even an unusual choice work. However, we know he won’t have full creative control over the film, and this push for a younger Bond feels like Amazon trying to create a “new” version aimed at younger audiences—a move that risks turning a timeless character into just another trendy reboot. If this is the beginning of Amazon exerting too much influence, then I’m worried about where the Bond franchise might be headed.
