While there were definitely standout moments throughout the season—episode 2, for example, being one of the strongest across all three seasons of Squid Game—by the time we reached the finale, it was just…not good. The whole thing felt like it shouldn’t have even been made, as if Netflix was simply trying to cash in on a franchise that should have ended after the first season.
What went wrong? (Spoilers ahead)
The real turning point came with the birth of the baby. The CGI infant, while admittedly not entirely terrible, still looked like what it was: a digital creation. Yet this baby then had to be dragged through the game as an additional participant because the idiot VIPs thought it would be amusing. This completely altered Gi-hun’s objective, which had already weakened after his failed uprising, since he’d abandoned his original mission to stop the Frontman and dismantle the games altogether.
The ending was chaotic. At the worst possible moment, Gi-hun decides to jump off the final tower to comply with the game’s rules and save the baby, despite two huge assumptions: A) that these sadistic game operators would actually do something decent with the child (even though they were willing to let it die thirty seconds earlier), and B) that they’d hand over billions in prize money to a newborn.
The timing is awkward because only minutes later, the Coast Guard and detective arrive to raid the compound. If the events hadn’t coincidentally overlapped so closely, Gi-hun might have safely escaped with the baby once the Frontman pressed the button to lower them, which seems likely at that point. But the show insisted on including that meaningless sacrifice from Gi-hun, even though it led to nothing significant.
In the end, the Frontman randomly hands the baby off to his brother, along with the baby’s winnings, because obviously, the child needed a destination after being central to the last four episodes. I’m fine with the Frontman surviving everything, but I can't believe the entire series wrapped up without even one of those insufferably cruel and vile VIPs getting killed. We spent the whole season waiting for that payoff, and instead, they just vanish. Maybe they were blown up? We’ll never know.
And then there was the Cate Blanchett cameo, which topped it all off. Presumably, the idea was to cast a big-name actor in that role, similar to what they did with Korean stars, but it was jarring to see such a recognizable Western actress appear out of nowhere in the final moments of the show (the only other Western actors being the revolting VIPs). While no American spin-off has been officially announced yet, it feels like exactly the kind of move Netflix would make. Whether or not they could get Cate Blanchett to return for a full series remains unclear—but the bottom line is, the games didn’t actually end. So all of this buildup was pointless, left open for more seasons or spin-offs in the future.
I thought season 3 got off to a strong start, but by the end, it turned into a rushed, disorganized mess where nothing really added up. It also completely discarded Gi-hun’s arc within minutes, which made for a disastrous conclusion to his character. What a disaster.
