To go back a bit, the initial design of the iconic Gundam by Kunio Okawara is surprisingly rounded in appearance, and this has consistently led to challenges when adapting it into model kits or toys.

In 1999, Bandai made a commendable attempt at accurately capturing the original Gundam with their Kado Senshi chogokin release. I own it, and for its era, it was executed quite well.

More recently, however, the design has been intentionally updated for model kits and especially for toys. This became an issue with the Robot Damashii spin-off series Ver. ANIME.

The purpose of these Ver. ANIME toys was to precisely mirror mecha designs from the respective anime, and all of them were beautifully crafted—except one.

The classic Gundam still featured a modernized sculpt and proportions, which naturally upset fans in Japan.

Every toy variant of the classic Gundam within this Ver. ANIME toyline shared the same problem, and many had resigned themselves to never receiving a proper version of the design.

That changed when it appeared in GQuuuuuuX, and in its original Okawara proportions.

Following the other Metal Robot Damashii releases from GQuuuuuuX, which incorporate die-cast materials, the original Gundam has now been added to that lineup.

Though this release only includes a beam saber and shield—no beam rifle or hyper bazooka—the fact that this toy finally stays true to Okawara’s original design is certainly appreciated.

Pre-orders begin today in Japan via Premium Bandai, and the price is also quite reasonable. At 16,500 yen (approximately $114 based on current exchange rates), you should also be able to use hands and weapons from previous Robot Damashii releases to complete the full set.
