Mira Murati’s Startup Might Rival OpenAI, Anthropic

According to reports from The Information and other outlets, Thinking Machine Labs aims to provide clients with tailored AI platforms based on business metrics and key performance indicators, utilizing reinforcement learning techniques.

In today’s tech landscape—where businesses are increasingly seeking adaptable AI solutions that can be customized for specific use cases—this kind of development is noteworthy. Given the buzz around Thinking Machine Labs, one might wonder: who exactly is leading this new venture? Since details about the company itself remain scarce, much of the context must come from CEO Mira Murati’s professional history.

Murati’s Background

So, what do we know about Mira Murati? Born in 1988 in Albania, she has held significant roles at both OpenAI and Tesla. She earned a degree in mechanical engineering from Dartmouth College.

At OpenAI, Murati served as Chief Technology Officer and oversaw the creation, rollout, and scaling of major products like ChatGPT and DALL·E. Notably, she briefly stepped into the role of interim CEO when Sam Altman was temporarily removed in late 2023.

Given the potential competitive relationship between her new company and OpenAI, it's natural to ask how Murati relates to Altman.

A piece published by The Decoder in March 2024 notes that Murati publicly rejected any personal conflict with Altman, describing the board’s decision to dismiss him as “perplexing” and stating that she and others worked to bring him back. As history shows, Altman was soon reinstated as OpenAI’s leader and has since written extensively on AI topics that I’ve explored in my own writing.

Murati also shares a past connection with Elon Musk, having worked at Tesla. A June article in Inc., titled “Open AI’s Pushback of Elon Musk’s Criticism Shows How to Defend Your Company Reputation,” highlights this link.

“Mira Murati, OpenAI’s chief technology officer, knows more than Musk does about how her company’s systems work,” wrote tech journalist Kit Eaton. “She made that clear through carefully chosen language during a public speech.”

I found Eaton’s framing of Musk’s criticism—and OpenAI’s response—to be compelling, even if the conclusion sounds a bit dramatic: “Despite his usual skepticism toward AI, Musk threatened to ban Apple devices from his companies if they deeply integrated OpenAI’s technology, warning on X that he thought Apple was ‘selling you down the river’ with ‘creepy spyware.’ OpenAI’s CTO responded directly, and her remarks firmly put Musk in his place.”

This incident gives some insight into how Murati handled pressure from high-profile figures. Beyond that, however, there doesn’t seem to be much else in the way of notable interactions between her and Musk.

But again, why is there so much interest in Murati? Here’s the breakdown:

  1. Thinking Machine Labs is expected to become a major player.
  2. There is very little public information available about the company’s operations.
  3. Much of our understanding hinges on Murati’s experience working at two competing firms under two influential tech leaders who later had disagreements.

Why Does This Matter So Much?

To put it plainly, this news is gaining attention because we’re living in an age where services—especially microservices—are central to digital transformation. In another post, I discussed how my colleague Dave Blundin described the growing need for technical support in digital services, especially as AI reshapes the internet. He specifically pointed to CRM systems as an example. It makes sense: many vendors sell overly complex CRM platforms that don’t fit the actual needs of businesses. If AI can automate customization, the impact could be huge.

I believe Thinking Machine Labs will likely be among the pioneers—alongside its competitors—offering U.S. companies the tools needed to thrive in an AI-driven economy.

We're also witnessing a wave of consolidation across the tech industry, where only a few elite companies (like OpenAI) stand to benefit most from the shift toward AI-native infrastructure. Watch closely for Thinking Machine Labs and similar emerging players as the race intensifies.
