Character creation and meeting Uriel Septim
As noted earlier, the opening of Oblivion Remastered focuses on character creation, highlighting key traits that will shape your gameplay style. Regardless of your initial choices, remember that you can adjust them later before escaping confinement—so there’s no pressure to get it perfect on the first try.
Your chosen race will influence certain starting attributes, so pay attention to both Race and Origin. While personal preference guides your decisions, refer to our best race guide for detailed insights.
Using the 'Randomise Appearance' option can speed up the customization process. | Image credit: Eurogamer / Bethesda Game StudiosVisual elements like appearance have no impact on gameplay, allowing you to tailor your character’s look freely.
This process can take time, so if you prefer to jump straight in, use the 'Randomise Appearance' tool for quick results. For a more unique look, manual adjustments on the Head and Hair pages may be necessary.
Once satisfied, finalize your appearance and step into a modest prison cell.
Take a moment to observe your surroundings, then listen to another prisoner across from you.
Following ominous words, guards arrive with Emperor Uriel Septim, who you met in the intro cinematic. A soldier will instruct you to stay back, so comply and wait behind your cell.
You’ll briefly be immobilized before conversing with Uriel, who offers you a chance to join him via a hidden door. From here, you gain full control, descending the stairs alongside the guards.
Basics of combat, equipping gear, and reaching the Natural Caverns
Shortly after descending, you’ll encounter assassins attacking the guards. Observe the battle as you lack a weapon initially.
One guard will eliminate one assassin quickly, enabling you to loot Captain Renault for a Katana, Steel Shortsword, and Torch. Note that the Katana will be removed after the prison section, so keep a secondary weapon ready.

Advance through the room to find a Rough Leather Shield and Rusty Iron Bow near a skeleton containing Iron Arrows, Lockpicks, and more. Open a nearby chest with a lockpick to retrieve Gold and a Sapphire.
Looting is abundant in Oblivion, but mind your inventory weight limit, which increases with Strength. Allocating points to Strength during leveling can help if you plan to hoard items.
Image credit: Eurogamer/Bethesda Game StudiosPick up desired items before facing another Rat and proceeding toward a lit doorway.
This leads to the Imperial Substructure, accessible via lockpicking or an Iron Key found on a Goblin Shaman’s body. Collect additional items from the Shaman.

Search a chest beneath a ray of light for arrows, lockpicks, and armor pieces. Gather what you need and proceed through corridors filled with Rats and Zombies.
A room with scattered bones offers a Rusty Iron Helmet, Rusty Iron Shield, and miscellaneous items. Continue through more corridors to reach a cavernous zone.
Fight Rats and collect items before exiting through a door leading into the Natural Caverns.
Exploring the Natural Caverns
This segment is concise yet allows you to practice combat in a new setting.
In tight quarters, you’ll face various Goblins—standard, Skirmisher, and Berserker types—and eventually a Witch.

Eliminate them and move past to a larger area with multiple Goblins and Rats below. Approach stealthily or aggressively, using the space strategically.
Here, you can loot the Goblin Witch’s weapon, a Goblin Shaman Staff, for magical purposes or profit.
Check the room for a Repair Hammer and other items before passing through a door to the Imperial Subterrane.
Reuniting with Uriel Septim and choosing your Birthsign
After a brief detour outdoors, reunite with the guards and Uriel Septim. Additional combat ensues, followed by a conversation where you select your Birthsign.
Like race and origin, your Birthsign impacts your character. Review the options and choose one aligned with your build. Unsure? Check our best Birthsigns guide.
After selection, conclude the conversation. Baurus hands you a Torch and instructs you to stay close. Engage in optional dialogue or proceed through the door into the next area.
Another fight occurs, followed by another in the next room.
Defeat the foes and follow the group through a door to the Sanctum.
Defending Uriel Septim, receiving the Amulet of Kings, and choosing your Class
Enter the Sanctum and descend the stairs. Dialogue plays out.
Next, defend Uriel Septim in a nearby room while the guards confront attackers.
Moments later, Uriel engages in conversation, handing over the Amulet of Kings and issuing cryptic warnings.
Image credit: Eurogamer/Bethesda Game StudiosAfterward, eliminate the Assassin. Baurus returns and asks for clarification. Explain the situation, then choose your Class.
Your choice depends on your preferred playstyle and build. Consider a custom class with a chosen Specialization, Favoured Attributes, and Major Skills. For guidance, consult our best class guide.

At this stage, you’ll receive the next quest, directing you to navigate the Sewers and emerge into Cyrodiil to reach Weynon Priory.
The Katana from Captain Renault will be removed, so switch to another weapon.
