Forbes' 'Wicked' Review: A Stunning Cinematic MasterpieceBy Erik Kain

It was somewhat disheartening that the movie was divided into two parts, but on the Bright Side, we can eagerly anticipate the sequel, Wicked: For Good. The title is slightly awkward, though it’s derived from the musical's climactic track, "For Good," which essentially marks the culmination of the bond between Elphaba – the Wicked Witch of the West – and Galinda – Glinda the Good Witch. She’s not a wicked witch; she’s a good witch. Similarly, Elphaba isn’t truly wicked either, despite the Wizard of Oz’s propaganda attempting to sway Oz's inhabitants otherwise.

This is evident in the new trailer, which emphasizes the relationship between the two witches while offering glimpses of the anti-Wicked Witch Of The West campaign. We also catch sight of the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, and Dorothy from Kansas, as they head towards the Great And Powerful Oz:

Considering this, Dorothy seems like an oddly peculiar choice for the Wizard to send against his magical adversary. Odd yet effective, if The Wizard Of Oz is any indication, though without revealing too much, this narrative is clearly distinct from L. Frank Baum’s book and the classic film adaptation.

It also diverges significantly from Gregory Maguire’s novel, which is far darker and more cynical than the Broadway show and the films. What a series of adaptations we have: Baum’s book (an allegory for the silver vs gold standard debate at the time), the classic Judy Garland film, Maguire’s book, the stage show, and now these two new films. Could a Wicked video game be next? I’d certainly give it a try.

I’m optimistic that the second film will expand on some of the action sequences from the second act of the stage show. For understandable reasons, those are somewhat condensed and simplified in the musical. As a medium, film offers exciting possibilities for larger action scenes as well as more intimate close-ups. This is undoubtedly at the top of my most-anticipated films list for 2025.
