Windows device encryption helps protect personal and sensitive data, but can sometimes fail. If you get a "Device Encryption Temporarily Suspended" error on your device, don't worry, there are some effective ways to easily fix this.
What is device encryption?
Most users are familiar with BitLocker drive encryption, a security feature integrated with the Windows operating system. By contrast, only a few users understand device encryption, another security feature Microsoft has added to Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems to protect user privacy data.
How to operate BitLocker Drive Encryption Recovery?
Comparison of device encryption and BitLocker
Device encryption and BitLocker are both built-in utility tools for ensuring data security (preventing unauthorized access to user drives and data). They work together to improve system security and share many things in common.
However, there is also a difference between Windows device encryption and BitLocker. The biggest difference between the two is that device encryption is available on supported devices running any version of Windows 10 and Windows 11, while BitLocker is not available on Windows 10 Home and Windows 11 Home.
Device encryption hang
By enabling device encryption, Windows 11/10 users can easily prevent unauthorized people from accessing and editing their data. However, many users complain about the problem of "device encryption temporarily hangs". They see device encryption errors in the system after resetting the device or for other reasons.
How to fix the "Device Encryption Temporarily Suspended" issue in Windows 11/10
Some users open Settings and access Device Encryption as usual, but find that device encryption is suspended. The exact error message is: "Device encryption is temporarily suspended. The next time you restart this device, the encryption will automatically resume."
As the message shows, Windows users simply restart the computer and the encryption will automatically recover. However, based on user feedback, restarting cannot fix device encryption errors in most cases. What else can I do? When the system prompts the device encryption to be temporarily suspended, they might as well try the following fix.
Fixed: Windows 10 is stuck on the restart screen.
Method 1: Clear the TPM on the device
How to clear TPM:
- Open the Run dialog box as usual. The most direct way is to press Windows R.
- Type tpm.msc in the Open text box.
- Click the OK button below or press the Enter key on the keyboard.
- The Trusted Platform Module (TPM) Management snap-in appears on the local computer .
- Navigate to the Actions pane on the right.
- Find Clear TPM option and click on it.
- You should then close the TPM snap-in and restart the computer.
After the computer starts successfully, you should add the BitLocker key protector:
- Right-click the Start button in the lower left corner, or directly press Windows X.
- From the WinX menu, select Windows PowerShell (Administrator) . (What if the WinX menu doesn't work?)
- Type manage-bde -status and press Enter .
- It may display the key protector as not found , which means you need to add the TPM as the key protector for the operating system drive (such as the C: drive).
- Type Add-BitLockerKeyProtector -MountPoint "C:" -TpmProtector (If the C: drive is not your system drive, replace C with another drive letter) and press Enter .
- After the command is successfully executed, the device encryption problem should be resolved. You can check the encryption status of the device by executing manage-bde -status again.
Method 2: Pause and restore device encryption using CMD
You can also use the Command Prompt tool to pause and restore device encryption.
- Press Windows S.
- Type cmd .
- Right-click the command prompt and click Run as administrator .
- Type manage-bde -pause C: (C: refers to the drive letter of your system drive) and press Enter .
- Type manage-bde -resume C: (C: refers to the drive letter of your system drive) and press Enter .
This should help you fix the "Device encryption temporarily hangs" error.
