Consider this – all of this has occurred at approximately the speed of light. How should we adjust? Humans are adaptable, yet only to a certain extent.
In any case, there are several guidelines that can prove useful when venturing into new AI initiatives. Some of these pertain to data management, as data is essentially the primary resource.
A Panel of Specialists
I recently attended a session at IIA in April featuring Jean Olive from John Hancock, John Sviokla of GAI Insights, and MIT CSAIL professor Hari Balakrishnan, where the trio delved into these concepts and their practical applications in the field.
Early on, Olive highlighted a shift from iterative product design to a more comprehensive approach. Sviokla spoke about flawed incentive frameworks and how they hinder certain innovations, mentioning an acronym EAT for Educate, Apply and Transform.
“What you truly require is a set of operational transformation metrics, incorporating research and development, and eventually, in the long run, a return on asset measurement,” he stated. “Without such a transformative incentive structure at the top of organizations, we won’t reach our goals.”
Balakrishnan, discussing his position as chair of a board at a company with 500 employees, outlined three critical areas he believes are crucial for AI.
First, foster speed. Second, enhance reliability. Third, promote creativity through data, emphasizing the necessity of “cleaning up” data for usage.
“Everyone assumes it’s straightforward, but there are numerous constraints and significant creativity required to achieve that,” he remarked.
The panel also touched upon the application of synthetic data within AI systems.
“The capability to enhance analysis by producing synthetic data wasn’t at all intuitive … at all,” Sviokla mentioned. “There’s a limit to the information that can generate synthetic data … How does that function?”
The Human Element
“When you enable people to connect with one another, whether it’s your patients, clients, or producers, that, to me, is the true strength—boosting that speed and facilitating connectivity in the human aspect,” Balakrishnan expressed. “I believe we don’t discuss this enough.”
Sviokla shared a story introducing the concept of “signature skills.”
“I once conducted research with a woman named Dorothy Barton at Harvard Business School, and she had this remarkable term called signature skills,” he recounted. “She claimed that when individuals identify with their signature skills … focusing on the method of work rather than the output, they struggle significantly with technological transformation. However, if they associate their pride or identity with the result of the work, it becomes much simpler.”
AI Agents in Action
As AI agents enter the scene, Olive proposed that the challenge lies in making prudent deployment choices.
Sviokla concurred that agents will play a major role, referencing a “silicon hive mind” influencing the sector.
“I think we have numerous examples and lessons to learn from program trading, object-oriented programming, and various other fields,” he noted.
Balakrishnan mentioned that his clients have been extensively utilizing agents.
All of this contributes to understanding what enterprises are currently accomplishing—but what businesses are achieving today isn’t what they’ll be doing tomorrow. Hence, stay vigilant for those significant transformations accompanying our rapidly changing world.
