How to beat Gaping Jaws in Elden Ring Nightreign

There are eight formidable Nightlords awaiting you at the conclusion of your Expeditions in Elden Ring Nightreign, with some presenting greater challenges than others, including Gaping Jaws (also known as Adel, Baron of Night). Unlike the three-headed wolf, Tricephalos, Gaping Jaws presents a completely different challenge as he carelessly charges around the arena attempting to devour you with his large jaws.

Initially, he doesn’t appear too menacing, but as the battle progresses, he accelerates, and his array of attacks become significantly more perilous to you and your team. To assist you in countering this and defeating the boss, here’s our guide on how to defeat Gaping Jaws in Elden Ring Nightreign.

How to Defeat Gaping Jaws in Elden Ring Nightreign

Before embarking on an Expedition to ultimately confront Gaping Jaws in Nightreign, there are several considerations to keep in mind while exploring Limveld and preparing for the encounter. Being mindful of the Nightlord’s weaknesses from the moment you enter Limveld can aid in equipping yourself with gear and passive effects that make the fight more manageable:

  • Gaping Jaws is vulnerable to ailments that slow or halt him: Poison, Sleep, and Frostbite are effective, with Poison being the most beneficial.
  • Gaping Jaws inflicts Physical and Lightning Damage, so any passive effects or Dormant Powers negating these damage types are advantageous.
  • Having an Ironeye or Recluse on your team to apply status ailments like Poison and Frost from a safe distance is wise. It’s also advisable to bring at least one melee character capable of drawing the boss's attention.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of entering the fight with a status ailment against Gaping Jaws. Without Poison or Sleep to impede the massive dragon, he becomes exceedingly challenging: dashing back and forth across the arena trying to capture you with his jaws or subjecting you to his area-of-effect attacks, leaving minimal time for counterattacks.

Poison and Sleep are ideal for this fight, with Poison halting Gaping Jaws mid-vomit, while Sleep temporarily immobilizes the boss. If an Ironeye can secure a Poison-affinity or Sleep-affinity bow—or any other character on your team—this is excellent. One player can maintain the ailment from afar while another applies it via a Poison or Sleep-inflicting melee weapon, sustaining the ailment throughout the majority of the fight (especially helpful during Gaping Jaws' second phase). However, if you're playing a melee character, be cautious not to stand in Gaping Jaws' puddle of vomit, as it will poison you.

Frostbite is another useful status ailment, though it won’t impede or slow Gaping Jaws: it stacks, dealing significant damage, and enhances the potency of other status ailments. While Poison and Sleep are optimal for Gaping Jaws, Frostbite remains beneficial if those are unavailable during your Expedition.

During Gaping Jaws’ first phase, watch out for these attacks:

  • Crushing Maw: Adel pulls its head backward, opens its mouth, and charges at the Nightfarers, attempting to consume them and triggering Blood Loss. Recognizable by the purple Lightning beside Gaping Jaws’ jaws, the best way to evade this is by dodging directly through the attack as he approaches. Teammates caught by this attack can be freed early if remaining players quickly attack Gaping Jaws.
  • Roaring Tantrum: Adel roars, stunning nearby Nightfarers, followed by two running attacks and a grab attack. The roar itself, though annoying, doesn’t cause damage; use it as a signal to flee Gaping Jaws’ running attacks and prepare to dodge through the grab attack if targeted.
  • Roars: Gaping Jaws frequently roars, stunning you if caught in it, but fortunately, it doesn’t inflict damage. These roars are usually succeeded by him running across the arena twice and attempting a grab attack with his jaws. Similar to Crushing Maw, you can dodge his grab attempts.

Around 50% HP remaining, Gaping Jaws halts and begins blowing purple, releasing a lightning explosion around him that marks the start of his second phase; sprint away as his transition begins to avoid the blast. Now, Gaping Jaws becomes faster, and you’ll face more lightning to dodge, along with some dreadful area-of-effect attacks.

In Gaping Jaws’ second phase, he continues using attacks from his first phase and introduces the following new attacks:

  • Diving Jaws: Following Gaping Jaws' transition into the second phase, he flies upward before diving down, dealing Physical damage to anyone in his path and then unleashing a Lightning blast. Dodge his dive and jump over his blast; jumping to avoid it is safer.
  • Lightning Blasts: Gaping Jaws occasionally stomps, sending surges of Lightning through the ground that explode after a brief delay. Upon seeing the ground covered in purple lightning, dodge through the blast or sprint away and ensure you aren’t standing on the Lightning veins in the arena floor.
  • Roars: Gaping Jaws’ roars from his first phase persist, but now he runs across the arena only once (instead of twice) before attempting a grab attack, so be prepared for this!

Beating your way through Gaping Jaws’ first phase is relatively straightforward, but his second phase proves far more demanding. Given his speed and area-of-effect blasts, it’s considerably harder to establish the recommended status ailments—Poison and Sleep—especially if your team relies heavily on melee attacks.

If you’ve brought any consumables into the fight—such as Poison or Sleep Pots, Exalted Flesh, etc.—it’s best to reserve them for the second phase, where you’ll need to utilize every resource at your disposal to manage Gaping Jaws’ aggression.

It’s a lengthy, exhausting battle—particularly without status ailments—but as you grow accustomed to his aggressive yet limited moveset and continue to attempt building Poison, Sleep, or Frost on him, you’ll discover that he can be slowed down (or even stopped entirely), providing ample opportunities to deal substantial damage. Gaping Jaws is certainly no easy task, but he’s far from the most punishing of Nightlords, that’s for certain!
