ForbesNYT ‘Connections’ Hints And Answers For Saturday, May 31By Paul Tassi
I’ve returned from my travels and am prepared to tackle some puzzles. Today, we’ll be solving Sunday’s Connections and grouping sets of words. I found today’s quite straightforward, but each one heavily relies on your personal word associations, which vary from person to person. It’s a brand-new month, dear Connectioneers. Let’s jump right in!
How To Play Connections
Connections is the second most popular NYT Games puzzle game after the main crossword, and it’s an incredibly enjoyable, free activity that gets your mind working daily. You can play it right here.
The aim is to take a collection of 16 words and identify links between four pairs of four of them. These could be specific categories of terms, or they might involve smaller word puzzles where you need to determine words that come before or after them. The complexity increases from there.
There’s only one correct set of answers, and you have a limited number of attempts, so you can’t just guess randomly until you find something. Difficulty levels are indicated by colors—usually starting with yellow, progressing to blue/green, and ending with purple as the challenges grow tougher. Keep this in mind when you begin connecting the words.
Select the four words you believe are linked; if correct, you’ll receive a solution and a highlighted row showing how they connect. If you’re nearly correct, it will notify you that you’re one away. Four incorrect guesses and you lose. If you wish to see the answers without failing, either check here or clear your web cookies and try again. For additional puzzles, consider subscribing to the NYT Games archive to access past puzzles.

Today’s Bonus Clue: The purple group pertains to money today.

- ?Green group – Sports-related words.
- ?Purple group – Add a word to the end of each of these.
What Are Today’s Connections Groups?
Now, here are the full spoilers, revealing the groups for today:
- ?Yellow group – Local drinking spots.
- ?Blue group – Secure, as a win.
- ?Green group – Participate in a modern pentathlon.
- ?Purple group – ______ Fund
What Are Today’s Connections Answers?
Below are the complete answers for each group, including the four words in each category. Spoilers ahead if you wish to avoid reaching this point. The Connections answers are:
- ?Yellow group – Dive, Establishment, Haunt, Joint
- ?Blue group – Cinch, Guarantee, Ice, Lock
- ?Green group – Fence, Ride, Shoot, Swim
- ?Purple group – Hedge, Mutual, Slush, Trust
As soon as I saw DIVE and HAUNT, I was confident they belonged together, and the rest of the yellow words quickly became apparent. I found the purple group relatively simple too, with HEDGE and TRUST standing out as types of funds. Identifying MUTUAL and SLUSH wasn’t difficult afterward. Now I just need an Erik Fund. It wasn’t until later that I realized the green words were all part of a pentathlon, though I was fairly certain they were Olympic sports. That left the blue group, and once I had LOCKED IN my answer, my victory was GUARANTEED.
