How To Solve Strands
The New York Times’ Strands puzzle is a twist on the traditional word search. It’s currently in beta, meaning it will only continue if enough people engage with it daily.
Each day brings a fresh Strands challenge. The puzzle presents a six by eight grid filled with letters. Your task is to identify a set of words that share a common theme, with a hint provided about the theme itself. Once you spot a theme word, it stays highlighted in blue.
Additionally, you must locate a special word known as the spangram. This word reveals what the other words have in common and connects two opposing sides of the grid. Although theme words cannot be proper names, the spangram might be. Upon finding the spangram, it remains highlighted in yellow.
Keep your wits sharp; these puzzles aren’t easy.
“Themes could include fill-in-the-blank phrases, steps in a process, items from the same category, synonyms, or homophones,” The New York Times explains. “Just as she adjusts the difficulty of Wordle puzzles weekly, [Wordle and Strands editor Tracy]
Bennett intends to introduce unexpected challenges occasionally.” Today’s Strands Hint
First, here’s the NYT hint followed by my own:

Today’s Strands Solutions
Let’s move on to the solution part of the session, starting with the spangram and the complete list of other answers. The spangram is:
HAIRACCESSORIES
Here it is in the puzzle, continue reading:
The answers are:
CLIP
BARRETTE
CLAW
SCRUNCHIE
HEADBAND
This particular puzzle was quick for me even though I don’t use any of these items myself. Not that I wouldn’t—my hair just isn’t long enough for them to make much difference. At the start, I struggled with spelling “barrette” correctly, trying several variations before finally getting it right. I’m guessing a claw refers to a type of clip based on context. Overall, once I got going, it was smooth sailing.
