'The Last Of Us' Season 2, Episode 4 Recap And Review: So Much For Happy Proud Rainbow Town
May 06, 2025 am 09:56 AMThis week's The Last of Us episode significantly improved on the previous one, addressing some of my earlier concerns about Bella Ramsey's portrayal of Ellie. While the initial episodes presented Ellie as oddly hostile and reckless, this episode showcased a more nuanced character, aligning more closely with the game's depiction. The strategic writing, making Ellie initially abrasive to highlight the impact of Joel's death, finally pays off.
A standout moment, directly lifted from the game, features Ellie playing "Take On Me" on a discovered guitar. The scene's emotional power, amplified by Dina's heartfelt reaction, perfectly captures the game's blend of bleakness and poignant character moments. These quieter, beautiful scenes provide a welcome respite from the constant horror.
The episode doesn't shy away from the graphic violence, delivering another intense action sequence in a Seattle subway, filled with infected and the antagonistic Wolves. A gripping scene sees Ellie bitten while saving Dina, leading to a tense standoff and the revelation of Ellie's immunity and Dina's pregnancy. This honesty between the two women leads to an intimate moment, though the age difference between the actresses remains somewhat jarring.
The ongoing conflict between the Wolves and Scars provides additional layers of complexity. While the Wolves, led by the compelling Isaac (Jeffrey Wright), are convincingly portrayed as ruthless yet understandable, the Scars feel overly simplistic and almost cartoonish in their medieval-style tactics and lack of modern weaponry. This stark contrast undermines the show's otherwise realistic approach to the post-apocalyptic setting.
The episode ends with a lingering question: Will we see Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) before the season finale? With only three episodes remaining, the possibility of mirroring the game's storyline in a potential Season 3 becomes increasingly likely.
Overall, this episode was a significant improvement, strengthening Ellie and Dina's bond and providing thrilling action sequences. While the Scars remain a point of contention, the emotional depth and compelling character moments make this a strong installment. The musical interlude was a particular highlight, hinting at more musical moments from the game to come.
