ForbesNYT ‘Connections’ Today: Hints, Answers For Monday, April 14By Kris Holt

Hey, folks! I hope your week is off to a great start.

One of the more galling news stories I read last week was regarding a deal that Meta struck with Blumhouse, the production company behind a fun horror movie called M3GAN, for special showings of the film. During these one-night only screenings, audience members will be seemingly able to chat with the evil robotic doll depicted in the film through an Instagram chatbot.

I can’t think of much that would annoy me more than to have the light from a phone screen glaring in front of me while I'm trying to watch a movie. I keep to myself much of the time, but in this case I might feel compelled to tell the social rule breaker to put their phone away.

I’ve been seeing a lot of chatter about youngsters going to see A Minecraft Movie and filming themselves while doing things like throwing drinks and popcorn, reacting wildly to memed moments and being deeply annoying.

I hate all of this very much! I was mad when my screening of The Witch was disrupted by a group that would not stop talking and giggling all the way through. But stuff like this would be a thousand times worse.

One of the many reasons I love going to the movies is to have a very good excuse to ignore my phone and focus on the film. I’d love to have easy access to say, an Alamo Drafthouse or another chain where this kind of distracting garbage is not tolerated at all. On the other hand, distributors are desperate to attract people to see films in theaters. The movie business is struggling, but some gimmicks (like themed popcorn boxes) and TikTok trends are working to an extent. Even so, put your damn phone away at the movie theater, please and thank you.

Before we begin, I’ve set up a discussion group for NYT Connections and this column on Discord. We have a great little community over there and we chat about more than NYT games. Everyone who has joined has been lovely. It’s a fun hangout spot.

It’s also the best way to give me any feedback about the column, especially on the rare(!) occasions that I mess something up since I don’t look at the comments or Twitter much.

Today’s NYT Connections hints and answers for Tuesday, April 15, are coming right up.

How To Play Connections

Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. You get a new puzzle at midnight every day. You can play on the NYT website or Games app.

You’re presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four groups of four by figuring out the links between them. The groups could be things like items you can click, names for research study participants or words preceded by a body part.

There’s only one solution for each puzzle, and you’ll need to be careful when it comes to words that might fit into more than one category. You can shuffle the words to perhaps help you see links between them.

Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is usually the most difficult one. The purple group often involves wordplay.

Select four words you think go together and press Submit. If you make a guess and you’re incorrect, you’ll lose a life. If you’re close to having a correct group, you might see a message telling you that you’re one word away from getting it right, but you’ll still need to figure out which one to swap.

If you make four mistakes, it’s game over. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen with the help of some hints, and, if you’re really struggling, today’s Connections answers. As with Wordle and other similar games, it’s easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chats.

If you have an NYT All Access or Games subscription, you can access the publication’s Connections archive. This includes every previous game of Connections, so you can go back and play any of those that you have missed.

Aside from the first 60 games or so, you should be able to find my hints via Google if you need them! Just click here and add the date of the game for which you need clues or the answers to the search query.

What Are Today’s Connections Hints?

Scroll slowly! Just after the hints for each of today’s Connections groups, I’ll reveal what the groups are without immediately telling you which words go into them.

Today’s 16 words are...

  • BELL
  • REFRAIN
  • SPEED
  • CHORUS
  • BRIDGE
  • HUBRIS
  • DARLING
  • HEARTS
  • HOOK
  • AVOID
  • HERO
  • CEASE
  • SPOONS
  • PAN
  • ABSTAIN
  • TRAGEDY

And the hints for today’s Connections groups are:

  • Yellow group — halt or steer clear
  • Green group — like snap and rummy
  • Blue group — morality and melody could fit in here
  • Purple group — the second part, on the right (and straight on until morning, perhaps)

What Are Today’s Connections Groups?

Need some extra help?

Be warned: we’re starting to get into spoiler territory.

Today’s Connections groups are...

  • Yellow group — desist
  • Green group — card games
  • Blue group — elements of Greek drama
  • Purple group — second words of Peter Pan characters

What Are Today’s Connections Answers?

Spoiler alert! Don’t scroll any further down the page until you’re ready to find out today’s Connections answers.

This is your final warning!

Today’s Connections answers are...

  • Yellow group — desist (ABSTAIN, AVOID, CEASE, REFRAIN)
  • Green group — card games (BRIDGE, HEARTS, SPEED, SPOONS)
  • Blue group — elements of Greek drama (CHORUS, HERO, HUBRIS, TRAGEDY)
  • Purple group — second words of Peter Pan characters (BELL, DARLING, HOOK, PAN)

A fun game today apart from... well, you'll see. That's a 49th straight win in the books. That half-century is oh so close. Here's how I fared:

????

Aware that I might fall victim to my own HUBRIS given that what I thought were very clearly actual groups in recent days turned out not to be (yes, I'm still mad about that Super Mario thing), I nevertheless barged straight in with a guess of REFRAIN, CHORUS, BRIDGE and HOOK.

And, yes, inevitably, that was a red herring.

I am not someone who lends themselves to violence. I am a fairly peaceful person who never yells. But I would be lying if I said the idea of throwing my PC through the window at that moment didn't cross my mind.

Ahem. That meant we had to be looking at the other meaning of REFRAIN, so the yellows were academic.

After I saw HOOK and PAN together, the purples became obvious. They refer to Peter PAN, Captain James HOOK, Tinker BELL and Wendy (and John and Michael) DARLING.

As I looked at the remaining words and saw TRAGEDY and CHORUS together, "Greek" sprang to mind. After that, all that remained were the greens. I don't believe I've ever heard of SPOONS or SPEED as card games.

That’s all there is to it for today’s Connections clues and answers. Be sure to check my blog tomorrow for hints and the solution for Wednesday’s game if you need them.

P.S. I had another recommendation in mind for today but given that purple group, I'm gonna have to go with Hook.

Some claim it's Steven Spielberg's worst movie, but I love it so much. It was a staple of my childhood. My sister and I watched it a bunch of times. Spielberg takes a different perspective on his well-mined theme of absentee fathers by telling the story through the lens of such a person.

But more than that, it’s a film about the importance of childhood and the joy of play. I think it's really fun too. Dustin Hoffman and Bob Hoskins absolutely chew up the scenery as the villains. Bangarang.

Have a great day! Stay hydrated! Call someone you love!

Please follow my blog for more coverage of NYT Connections and other word games, and even some video game news, insights and analysis. It helps me out a lot! Sharing this column with other people who play Connections would be appreciated too. Also, follow me on Bluesky! It’s fun there.
